Right, I've decided to give my car it's first service since I've had her. What oil do I need? Where's the best place for the oil filter/air filter? I'm also going to change the dizzy cap and maybe get some good spark plugs - what ones would you recommend? Any other advice welcome. Thanks

In terms of oil I wouldn't get too worked up about super expensive synthetic oils - its more important to change the oil regularly.
I'd go for a decent midrange oil and change it every 3000 miles or so.

Any good quality semi synthetic oil should do your motor factors will advise, but be aware some of the thinner ones will give a slightly lower oil pressure when warm. Wrt the oil filter make sure you get the correct one (i.e. short and fat not long and thin - see alternative parts list) as both types fit the engine, but the long thin one will foul the chassis. Make sure you do the fuel filter, changing mine improved performance significantly as I don't think it had been changed for ages.

Always get mine from Ford main dealership, all parts are cheap for the V6.

It is important that you get the correct size oil filter as most of the standard ones for a 2.9 V6 won't fit an S as the space is restricted. Suitable replacements are on the parts list (I've just fitted a FRAM 2854).

If you're changing the oil get a new copper washer for the sump plug or a complete new sump plug and washer.

Might be worth changing the dizzy rotor as well but go for a genuine ford part.

Would recommend that you drop the exhaust and grease the propshaft UJs

If you've got the bible then there is a full list of things that need checking, greasing etc.

By the way, I bought a great tool for getting the oil filter off.



It's in a fairly inaccessible position on the 2.9 V6S, but this makes the job much easier.



The grips lock (like molegrips), so it's easier to get a very good grip on the filter, even though it's difficult to get at (left-handed), and there's less chance of getting burned by the manifold.



It also comes with PVC covers for the jaws, so it's possible to use these to (carefully) tighten up the new filter.
