Stiff Gear Change

Hi, just back from holiday and got the car out for work this morning found the
gearchange to be really stiff in fact almost impossible to get into gear initially
with the engine running but okay when engine off. I know stiff gear changes are
a feature of the S2 but this is much worse than normal. Did free off a bit by the
time i drove to work but still worse than normal.
Question is, any idea if its likely to be the linkage or the clutch thats suffering ?

Have you checked the clutch fluid level? Could be that. I would say a clutch related problem of some sort.

I'd agree - sounds like the clutch isn't disengaging properly.

I think its most likely to be to do with the hydraulics which is slightly good news in that the engine / gearbox doesn't have to come out.

As R2R says, check the fluid level and then make sure the slave cylinder is moving far enough when the pedal is pushed. I think there's some adjustment on the push rod at the slave cylinder end, but as it's gone wrong in a short period I'd suggest fluid or master/slave cylinder rather than the adjustment.
