Sometimes when I stop in traffic etc. I have difficulty getting first gear,if I quickly engage 5th then back to 1st its ok (ish) on the move its ok. Same thing happens in reverse, can crunch a bit. Is this normal?

Have you any leaks from your clutch master or slave cylinder?

It's a weak point on these cars. Mine does it a bit, and the master cylinder has a slight leak (next job )

Could also be low oil in the gearbox.

Sounds like the clutch is dragging a tiny bit.
Could be dodgy master cylinder (not necessarily leaking fliud)
OR dodgy slave cylinder (would definately leak fluid)
OR the clutch friction plate sticking on the gearbox input shaft splines (I had this problem on a Sierra once)
OR bearing/bush between tip of gearbox input shaft and crankshaft dragging slightly.
Last two reasons are a real pain as the mend is very cheap but you have to remove the gearbox first!!

Good luck.

Thanks for that I think I'll check the hydraulics again as the other options will need a bit more time (and effort) anyway it ain't too bad (yet).
Cheers,
Steve
