Missing Oil Filler Pipe?

Not being too mechanically minded even I can guess that there is a pipe missing from the oil filler cap. I took a look at the Steve Heath book and there is one shown leading to the front of the engine bay but it doesn't show the end of the pipe.



Can anyone tell me what it is and where it goes?

Not fantasticallly clear but the pipe terminates in the side of the air filter so oil fumes are 're-breathed' however many owners have dispenced with the pipe and just attached a small filter to the oil filer cap, no doubt a photo will appear shortly

Hi Steve,

I have an early 1991 S3 and my filler cap has a length of hose on it that simply disappears into the wheelarch. I don't know if it came out of the factory like that, but there's no need to do anything more sophisticated with it unless you're worried about emissions.

Its the Oil Breather Pipe thats missing, it goes from the oil filler cap direct to the Air Filter. When I fitted my new air filter I couldnt bring myself to poke a hole in the side of it to allow hot oily air to join the nice clean cool air, so I fitted an oil catch tank for a few weeks and saw nothing significant coming out, so then fitted a small engine breather filter that you can get off ebay. You can see mine in this pic at the bottom.

Thanks everyone, I think I'll go for the filter like Ketvrin as I'm not to keen on oily fumes in the filter either.
