Body On Advice Needed

I will be bolting the body back on soon and can't remember how it was supported at the back. Should the body rest on the chassis above the diff or should it be held up of the chassis by the petrol tank frame. The body does flex quite a bit when not supported, most obvious at the door gaps. Any advice appreciated.

There's a couple of bolts through the boot floor into the petrol tank frame.
I've got a plan of where all the body bolts are if you PM me.

Hi, I believe that the body should be mounted on the steel plates on the main chassis in front of the diff. The petrol tank cradle is an add on and bolted to the body through the boot floor with 2 bolts, with any gap filled with rubber sheet. The petrol tank cradle effectively only supports the tank. hope this helps. Andy J

It was the area marked in yellow I was unsure of, even though I took plenty of photos before lifting the body I can't make out if the body is resting on the tubes or is held just above them by the tank frame. I think there may have been a strip of rubber on top of the rear cross tube which would suggest that the body rests on that tube. It all seems so long ago now and non of my photos show it clearly.

hi tony andy is right on mine there was no packing where you have highlighted mine just sat on the 2 angled mounts by the diff also on mine where the bolts go through the boot floor the rubber packing was different on both sides 1 side had 2 pieces and the other had 4 my son mikee boy,s s2 is the same

Thanks for the info, it does sound as though the rear bodywork is supported by the tank frame and not the chassis above the dif which would allow for some adjustment of the door gaps by varying the packing on the tank frame.
Must take even more photos in future.

Hi - Mine rested where your yellow mark is, on top of rubbers - I remember crawling under the body whilst off and there where witness marks where it had been sat. The below pic shows where the rubber mounts are approx 3mm thick.



I take it yours is an S3C as you have the earth connection - MEP12345 rebuild site would be interested in that pic.

Well that clears that up then!

Been back and had a closer look at the body and there are witness marks indicating the body was resting on two pads as on Seans' photo. Thanks again for the invaluable advice.

Sean - The car is an S3, what is the relevance of the earth point and what is the MEP12345 rebuild site?

Hi Tony, My car had the same rear earthing stud, I have read 2 different body off instructions and either car had this stud. Therefore MEPs fantastic site would benefit from your picture.

Forward the picture to me at [e-mail] and i'll add it. Mine had no rubber BTW and the body is supported by the tank cradle with about a 2mm gap above the cross member everyone is pointing at.

Sean,

Both mine and Tony's are S3s - his with earth mine without, hence would love to know what it is supposed to go to - could be filler pipe which is insulated from earth by the two rubber flexibles at each end (if so I would suggest likely to be done via a plumbing style earth strap. Also as you suggest if Tony's in and S3C decatted then it could have been for the "carbon filter" gubbin that are fitted in the boot by the filler pipe (not present on an S3 I believe).

Anyone any other ideas?

I have tried to see where the earth cable goes but cant find it at the moment, it goes through the bodywork in front ie cabin side of the rear bulkhead. The body is still raised of the chassis so I can't have a good look around. I will have another look once the body is lowered.
