BAD RUNNING

carhas been running great for weeks now ,new stepper
while out sunday car missed
then after 2 hours did it again ,car died then off again ok
later on car started tosplutter bad smell of petrol ,exhaust smoking a lot
turned off , 10 mins all fine
fan belt was loose now tight
starteduptoday all fine for 5 mins ,then bad smell of petrol
now running bad

ANY IDEAS
had new stepper leads plugs dizzy rotor arm last time

I had somthing similar a few months back. Initially the original fuel pump packed up, however I had a spare 2nd hand one in the garage which was of an XJS, I fit it and all was well until it started miss firing, smelling of petrol then ground to a halt. I turned of the ignition buggered about for a few minutes and tried to start it. It would always fire up again and run ok.

After a few of these little stops I decided that the car ran perfect until the 2nd hand pump was fit, so I swopped it for a new unit and presto, car runs sweet ( at the moment anyway).

Maybe fuel pump issues ???

I'm guessing but might be worth checking the ECU engine temperature sensor - its near the front of the manifold sticking up just behind the distributor - if its faulty or got a bad connection it might think the engine is cold and throw more fuel in.
If you are able measure the resistance of the terminals cold, then again with the engine stopped and it warmed up.
Might also be worth resetting the ECU - either go under the dash and remove the ECU plug - or disconnect the battery for a bit BUT DON'T SHUT THE BOOT!!

Other total guesses from me would be throttle pot or airflow meter.

unplugged ecu its the same
ran car on tickover all ok till fan comes in ,then revs start to go up and
down 500-1000 revs ,cuts out
no smokin this time
fuel pump seems to work no bad smell of fuel
on tickover
STEPPER MOTOR IS NEW

Doesn't explain it cutting out though.

What about a dirty fuel filter starving the engine then the pump forcing it through causing the surging?

put a new coil on
went for a run , was fine for a while then same thing
i may change fuel pump, i can hear it working ,but when i put my footdown car dies on me

cantsee it being the cam it would not be running fine one minute then rough the next. You would have noticed over a period of time a progressive problem with the running and the performance. Fuel starvation a possibility, especially under load, or with a strong smell of petrol unburnt fuel ,electrical problem? Coil the first thing to check which you have done.Get it booked in at that landrover dealers for a diagnostic check, im sure its nothing major. Your car sounded wonderful as you flew past me at **** speeds on our way home from S club

in the range rover garage in morning
will it behow much

took car on monday
broke down on way 6am
car would not start at all,got car to garage at815am
had to wait as there were 8 range rovers booked in that day.
when he looked at it late on said will notstart at all
friday got a call , got it to turn over, put a chim ecu on ran same
put mine back ran great 1 min ran bad

will have a look next week, thinks elctrics to fuel injctors

all my fuel gone £50 only done 6 miles
hope all understand LET YOU KNOW NEXT what goes on

There's a small black box just behind the passenger front wheel - it cuts the fuel off in the event of a impact - check the connectors mine were pretty crusty.

Is the cold start injector staying open? It should switch off once the starter stops cranking so I'm just taking a guess. Are the plugs very sooty?
