Route to SCH from oop narf

Is it too early to start discussing a route to SCH ?

here's my preferred route for the saturday morning...

from Hexham A69 (very early start)
to A1M to Washington Services
A1M to Scotch Corner
A1 to Boro-bridge (avoiding A1M)
A1 to Ferrybridge
A1 to Newark

so who will be joining en-route? where? other suggestions?

Kevin, I haven't looked at the map from oop north, but the venue is right next to the A1 and I see you already go on the A1 as part of your route - so maybe stay on there if you can stand the noise?

Hi Chris yep its the most direct but the least interesting route... I like to use that round thing in front of the drivers seat

I can't give you much advice North of Lincoln I'm afraid, and thats sketchy!
Lincoln to Newark is an arrow straight dual carriageway - beware of Plod there will be plenty around on the day!
Not that I thought you would exceed the speed limit of course!

Last year there was a convoy of us coming from the North West. The nearer we got to Coventry, the better it got as we picked up more and more cars along the way. Even though we stuck to the motorways, it was fantastic to travel as part of a big convoy made only of S's - something we hardly ever get to do at the regular TVRCC events.

Kevin, I share your enthusiasm for driving on more interesting roads, but Hull is quite a big detour (and from memory, the roads are so flat and straight south of the Humber that they aren't worth going out of our way for - apologies to all the local Lincolnshire folks that I've probably just upset).

How about planning a handful of stops along the way to meet other cars at service areas on the A1, say, Scotch Corner, Ferrybridge, then Blyth? Maybe some of our friends from Scotland could join us?

Yes you are probably right about the detour... I suppose we should be aiming to arrive during the early afternoon or on lunch so a direct route may be more sensible...

I'll think i'll struggle to join a convoy this year as its only 10 miles up the road!

All being well I will be coming from Bradford area, onto M62 east to join A1 at Ferrybridge southbound. If any are running down A1 I could possible meet at Ferrybridge services.

I joined the NW convoy from Blackpool last year and as Geoff said, it got better as we picked more cars up en route

I'll be at the Travelodge @ North Muskham on the A1 (either still in bed or in the Little Chef), its about 2miles before the turn off from the A1 for Newark.

After some offline discussion with my fellow Northerners... here is the plan for our convoy down the A1 to SCH. We will aim to keep to the following schedule and pick up anyone that wishes to join us along the way. It might be helpful if anyone else could post their intentions on this thread and we'll keep an eye out for you.

..for a bit of interest and a break from the A1, why not come off the A1 at Markham Moor, take the A57 to Lincoln,over Dunham Toll bridge(only 30p, then after about a mile after the bridge take the A1133, which takes you direct to the Newark showground roundabout.

The A1133 is a good stretch of road, with a few twists and turns, passing through some nice villages too. There's a nice little pub in Winthorpe (about a milebefore the showground)called The Nelson, if you fancy some refreshment.

The leg of the A1 from Markham to Newark is pretty boring...oh yes, mind out for the speed cameras in the 50mph zone, just south of Worksop.

Thanks for the suggestion, Tant. It's definitely something we will bear in mind - the idea was to get as many people in convoy as possible and the main roads are easier for that... even if they are not very exciting to drive on.

Will you be joining us? Sounds like you may be fairly local.
