Any thoughts or comments on this thread?

http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...

I suspect I couln't live with a TVR without the 'S' forum.

How can we move forward, or do we need to worry at all?

Its very disappointing isn't it frown

At least we do have some other places available where we can share information, photos and/or chat though.

I thought Garlick had removed the offending clause?

Ergo, nothing to worry about?

Correct (I think!)

When not here I spend my time in the photography forum where it's been discussed at length....

Colin, I don't see that - your site (or mine) isn't for commercial or personal gain - quite the opposite, they are sharing personal experience for the assistance of others (on a non-commercial basis).

Conversely, if Haymarket want to use any material from our sites for THEIR commercial gain, they had better get the cheque book out.

I don't normally link to my web site, I think it's a bit over the top to to that all the time. I limit it to specific items or photos in responses to questions that have been asked.

Seeing as I don't see a rule saying otherwise, though, I think I might start to close all posts with

Garlick - Can you confirm something for me please?

Rule 8 clearly says you must not "Post links to commercial websites..."

Can you therefore confirm that any links to Autotrader, eBay, Google, any manufacturer or specialist will be deleted if reported to a moderator
The new T&C's were written by lawyers, and while having rules serves a purpose they do seem a necessary evil these days, certainly not meant as a deterrent to users.

Looking at the comment above, links to sites such as Autotrader, or discussing a comment on the EVO forum for example would be OK, and is what the forums are for. The problems lie when you link to your own website/ your employers website or to a site that you have a financial interest in. Simply saying interesting comment here or nice car there is OK.

Taking that into account, I think this section needs re wording. I'll get that sorted.

According to those rules i cant link to my own website weather its commercial or not frown

That's not what the actual rules on the link below say though - they say:

You must not...

6. Post links to any site that is pornographic, violent, racist, sexist, voyeuristic or is otherwise offensive or unlawful in any way.
7. Post any material that is pornographic, violent, racist, sexist, voyeuristic or is otherwise offensive or unlawful in any way.
8. Post links to websites or adverts for commercial or personal gain. All advertising on PistonHeads must be through the normal channels.

I have no financial gain and no personal gain (apart obviously from the international kudos of being a guru who can give advice but not follow it and hence f**k up even the simplest job on a TVR).

If them's the actual rules (as the link says) then regardless of what else is posted as an interpretation of them, I don't see the problem.

(I'm getting used to this now!)

Of course the rules are as written. No point in writing them otherwise!

Apologies to all for kind of taking over this thread - but as the owner of one of the "reference" sites for the S (like Pies) it's extremely important to me that I have this correct.

Can't be bothered typing the damn link every time... hope the point's been made already

The current rules still say that anything posted on PH is copyright to PH. I'm not at all happy about that as I don't want anyone to get a commercial gain from our hard work and I can't see any other reason for Haymarket to put the clause in the conditions. A bit sad as it may well mean that many stop putting useful posts on here. We need to use the TVRCC site more but why doesn't everyone else? - OK I know that not all are members but many are and still the S forum is not as active as here by a long way. We should all dump this site and go to TVRCC site instead? Who's for that??

I've had a few email conversations about this with various people at TVRCC.
I said they should open up the forum to non members.
I think they are worried that they won't be able to cope with the traffic levels, I personally wouldn't object to a few ads on there to fund it, but appreciate that the TVRCC isn't a corporate machine with whellbarrow loads of dosh to throw at it.

No I'm not - I am not using a username that reflect a website name. I do however have a website that is easy to find if you know my username - but the username came first. Well to be accurate, the registration number came first.

If that is truly the case then I have posted my last bit of help here. I have requested clarification.

Worry not chaps. Upon investigation I can see where that one came from, but I hope to see it disappear shortly.

I can see the use of commercial names rule is open to a bit of ambiguity too. We'll see if we can clarify that so it's clear that it's just to dissuade people using their business names as usernames. It wasn't to upset the likes of TVRgit, BMWdriverNigel etc. etc.

And please don't forget us foreigners ! I am a member of the Dutch TVR Club and have requested access to the TVRCC forum but it was not granted. Its a bit silly to also become a TVRCC member just for the sake of the forum. A bit more flexability from the TVRCC would be welcome !

I couldnt understand why there was such a huge difference either. problem with changing over would be the loss of the history on this forum... and I wouldnt even dare suggest copying any of it in case it was infringing their copyright of our material confused And as Han says we would lose our valuable friends from abroad contributions.frown

I'm happy with Ted's response above about the web site links - I didn't really think that was a major problem.

I asked for clarification last night on the ownership of "help" posts etc and the free sharing of information. No more "help" posts from me pending a response.
