Headlights , Rev Counter, Mud Flaps

Hi all
I have a corroded reflector which needs replaceing, I know that the headlights were basically mini headlights, they are consequently slightly dim by todays standards. I have seen discussion on this forum related to headlight improvements, is it possible to upgrade the bulb unit without going to a very high out put which the wiring wont take. I would welcome suggestions or links to previous discussions
The only other item is a non working Tacho I have checked the fuses,the car is running fine so the coil is o.k.is there anything else oher than check the continuity of the feed wire & earth and/or replace the unit, if I can find one.
Since I got the car home I have had it up on axle stands & checked the underneath, there were one or two very minor points where the plastic coating was peeling these have now been scraped wire bushed Ku-Rusted redoxided +two coats of hammerite & will be wax-oiled when the paint has hardened. I found that the outrigger at the front offside corner needed treatment, surface rust was beginning to appear, but the nearside was o.k.I looked again and noticed that the inner wheel arch on the nearside was lower and partially protected the outrigger from the road dirt & stones, the off side is higher and the outrigger was fully exposed!!
I then remembered Kevin Bells miniture mud flaps made from part of a plastic dustbin, to protect his outriggers, I now have small neat mud flaps on both sides,protecting the chassis outriggers
and the remains of black plastic dustbin to dispose of or find an alternative use for.
The car is great, wonderfull noise, plenty oomph for overtaking on country roads and lanes
a joy to drive, all we need now is sunshine!!

I fitted Wipac Quadoptics with H4 bulbs and although they are not brilliant they are OK. I did see some reference to rewiring the lighting so that the switched circuit operated relays which then took the power direct from the battery to the lights so you didnt suffer from voltage drop through the original circuit and switching. I decided my night driving was not frequent enough to warrant all of this ... so far...

I strongly recommend Cibie H180 headlamps. I've used these for decades on a variety of cars and I've always been pleased with them. They're particularly good on dip beam. They're difficult to find now, but I bought a pair last year for around fifty quid I think. Hella are very good too, but I don't think they're available any more. I've tried the cheaper Ring/Wipac units in the past and been disappointed with them.
You need to use good bulbs too. You can improve a lot on the standard H4 these days without going to illegal wattages and cooking your wiring harness. See

Halfords were doing bogof on these recently - don't know if they still are.
