At some point I need to give my S3 a service. The question is, do I spend money on preserving the service history or do I do it myself?
What's involved in doing a basic oil/filter change on a 2.9S? I presume you need to get the car on ramps (if you can!) to get underneath it.
Conversely, how much does it cost to get one done commercially? I slightly resent paying for servicing, but I suppose there's some value to continuing the row of stamps in the service book. Can anyone recommend a specialist in the North London/Herts area?

its not to difficult to do oil change just a bit fiddly make sure you get thr right filter as it is a narrow fit sump plug is standar ford ,plugs are easy enough to do with correct tools as the drivers side bulkhead spark plug is a tight fit ,my personal opinion is that i don't think on this age of car full service history amounts to much

Chris, have a go yourself. Changing the oil and filter is easy. You can change the filter from the top without having to scrabble on the floor under the car. Parts are easy to find, I get mine from my local ford dealer. Yes you will need a jack, It makes life easier having the bonnet fully open. Plugs a doodle, distributor cap a doodle. Might be a good time to flush the rad too, again very easy. One thing, make sure you get a jack with a low saddle height. Personally I'm not too concerned if a cars service history has an official stamp or simply owner maintained/serviced so long as it is well documented.
Every time I service my cars I type out what I have done to them and staple the receipts to it to prove I've bought the parts.
I'd have a go yourself as well, though the gearbox oil/diff oil change can be a bit of a fidle without a service pit! engine oil is dead easy and easily accesible but definatley invest in a pair of axle stands (only about £15 from Halfrauds)
