My bonnets off my S3 at the mo, and I've just had a thought (oh dear...)
Has anyone tried to fit a gas strut to the bonnet to replace the standard bonnet stay?
I suppose it may cause a problem possibly with the low ride hight on uneven ground etc and not having the choice of the standard bonnet stay positions .
But just a thought - anyone already done this?

How about moving the bonnet pivots up/forward so you can open the bonnet properly, then you could fit a gas strut no problem? Don't see the point of the gas strut myself, but having a look at those pivots is on my 'to do' list.

I am looking into this for my own car but am still a bit worried, the problem being,
If you are driving along and the wonderful bonnet catch system were to fail the bonnet strut may have enough strength to lift the bonnet enough to catch the lower air intake and rip the whole lot forward resulting in a rather large bill!
Maybe an adjustable strut would work better?.On the other hand one of the original redish pink V8S's (H15 VBS, apparently a few factory cars shared this plate?) had a gas strut on the bonnet (plus a boot release handle near the O/S roof strut) so maybe this is why it never made it to the production cars?

Very true, especially if there's any wind around. What I've done to stop this is loop a reusable tie-wrap round the bonnet strut and the bonnet pin, it is permanently attached to the bonnet strut with another small tie-wrap so it stays in roughly the right place. No doubt there are better solutions but this was a 'ten second fix' that's lasted a couple of years now. By the way Lee's point about the bonnet opening itself when you're driving along is a good one, I hadn't thought of that. But I've had the bonnet come unclipped on one side several times, and once or twice it has come unclipped on both sides. Normally no problem but if the strut lifted it right up I guess it would get messy?
