asked the question about a ratteley exhaust which is anoying. Removed the exhaust to try and refit it properly.

It now appears that the rattle/vibration is inside the front or rear box. Can anyone advise as to what is going on, could something be broken and vibrating inside them.

Ther is metal mesh soundproofing in there in the box section, it degrades eventually and breaks into bits (especially helped by bashing the exhaust on the road).. the only options are:

1. live with it (my preferred choice)

2. try and shake the bits out or to a wedged position (unlikely to have any lasting effect and the bits can be quite big)

3. new exhaust.

Cheers,
Matt.

Just fixed mine. Took it to a welder - he cut the front section removed the internal mesh and then welded it back together.

Cost £30 - sounds a bit louder (not Sports Load) and no more rattle. My exhaust was a 96 and the box section was fine.

Took into the exhaust last night, had to cuct a hole the length of the front box to remove the broken baffels inside. Welded a new patch to seal up hole, great job! the car is much quietier now without all that loose metal bouncing about.

Was the exhaust rattle continuous or rpm specific? My 1988 S1 has a nasty metallic buzz a around 2,000 rpm, but only when the engine is under load. It's not there if I just rev the engine in neutral.
