Dear all.

Right, ive got my first TVR, ive striped it down, resprayed it, rebuilt it, looks and sounds great. So far im happy.
Ford 2.9i Cologne engine and gearbox is bog standard in all Ford Scorpio's, and it works bloody well in the Ford. Gear change is smooth and direct, engine purs nicely. So why is it that my S3 gear change is stiff, dont want to go in reverse, and can be a real fight to get through the box quickly ? Ive read all the other posts on this subject and it seems that im not alone.
If it works in a Ford, why not in a S3?
Convince me please because i cant see the answer.

Regards and Merry Xmas.

Dean.

Knackered gear box/wrong/insufficient oil/ dragging clutch/knackered remote linkage for starters...

Add to that leaking clutch hydraulics...

I had a similar problems with my S3!

The problem of not being able to select reverse easily was down to the gear lever being obstructed by the centre console.

Suggest removing the centre console and try reverse. While you have the console off I reccommend removing the the gear lever from the gearbox, 4 screws! and apply loads of copper slip type grease into the box. This made a big difference

Also, check the clutch slave cylinder for leaks, bleed and renew fuild may also help.

Have Fun

Yep, I always bung it in 3rd before attempting to select reverse and it works fine.

Had the same problem with my S3. It got progressively worse until finally I could not get it into reverse at all. Bit of a bugger really as I was trying to reverse out of a parking space at the time!!

Turned out to be the hydraulics, as mentioned I think it was the master clutch cylinder (or something like that – sorry it was a while ago now), apparently it was one of the few TVR specific items under the bonnet. I remember rolling up at the TVR dealer and them finding it highly amusing that the only bits that ever went wrong with my car were the TVR manufactured bits….charming!!!

Once sorted it made a huge difference though, never had any problems with engaging reverse after that.

The clutch cylinders are manufactured by Girling I believe and were originally used on the TR5.

To start with the S series engine/box/clutch is a bit of a mix match, the standard Ford (Scorpio etc)uses the 2.9i with a cable operated clutch and either an auto box or MT75 5 speed it also lines up very well unlike the S series where the dreaded dog leg arrangement on the gearstick makes the shift a little more awkward.Make sure that the slave cylinder pin is sitting in the right hole of the release arm or is correctly adjusted as this can cause problems (this was a fault with my car)

Cheers

I have just had similiar probs with my S1.5,except when cold the gear change is notchy but fine but gets worse as machine heats up. Gear box oil recently topped up and clutch fluid changed. Doesn't seem to lose clutch fluid, crawled under tonight and slave cylinder piston travel seems ok, but had a hard day away yesterday and by the time I got home it was almost impossible to select any gear! sound familiar anyone?
