Following Petrolted's comment about V6 exhausts in the 'S club heaven' thread, I would be interested in any recommendations for replacement exhaust systems for my S.

Any comments, spec's, suppliers, & ballpark prices gratefully received.

Cheers

I think what you really want is a "LeeBee" system

If Lee is around?, he can tell you the cost etc..

When I met Lee, he showed me his rather nice S2 with the LeeBee exhaust, the vocal note from it really does add another two cylinders - Sounds the poodles privates!!

Cheers,

Dave.

i must say the "leebee" exhaust is totally rude.... of all the "S" series cars that met up only the penninsula came anywhere near as loud, but not quite!!

I had my LeeBee exhaust at the S meeting if anyone remembers it.

The specification can be adapted to suit your needs and tastes. I have gone for the loudest of all the versions, and I assure you it is very loud ! I am considering quieting it down as it is my every day car and I'm commuting in and out of London in at the moment. 90 miles a day.

Car alarms go off, small children cover their ears and mine spits flames on occasion.

If you are interested I have an oval silencer, no prebaffle, original configuration tailpipes which are larger bore than the main pipes.

Some of the guys here may be able to tell you what it sounded like.

Johno,

It sounded great - but not quite as good as my new exhaust

What makes a Leebee exhaust different from mine. I have a Wedge sport stainless exhaust, which seems very loud, especially on cam?

I bought a stainless sports system from Penninsula in August. It cost in the region of £350, you can add a bit more for fitting, not bad from what I can make out.

I think Ted will vouch for the sound judging from his look of delight when he heard it at the S'Series meet.

John Bull, does the Peninsular exhaust have baffles in the centre box, or is it just an expansion chamber?

Btw thanks all for the responses

Good question! I guess there must be some form of baffel. All I can tell you is that there is an expansion box and it could contain baffels, as it is welded shut. From the sound it makes there must be some form of baffel otherwise it would be too loud!

I hope that makes sense and has not baffled you!

Probably best to get hold of Peninsula and ask them. Richard should know.

John,

I have to say that your exhaust made your 'S' sound like a V8 !! NICE !!

Is your Penisular system very loud at motorway speeds - I might still want to occasionally listen to the radio!

Seriously though, how does it compare with the std. system at say 2.5 - 3K rpm

I see from your profile that you are based around Ealing - do you ever venture further South/West? I was wondering if it would be possible to meet up for a listen?

Before anyone suggests 'you should have gone to the 'S' meet', I didn't get the car until the following Wednesday, else I would've been there!

All the best

I have had a s/s system fitted by Tower View in North London which I am very happy with. If you're a bit soft like me and don't want blood pouring out of your ears on the motorway then it could be worth considering (It's still louder than a standard system on normal roads but appears to have a relative quiet spot at around 80ish which suits me perfectly). LeeBee has heard my exhaust and thought it was quite nice (but he might have just been polite. I'm in Wokingham if you want a listen.....

Thanks for the response, I may well take you up on your offer to come and have a listen if I don't do something impulsive this weekend! Get an exhaust fitted that is!

O.k so I'm known as being a bit paranoid.., but has anyone who changed their exhaust informed their Insurance company of the "modification"? If yes, did it result in a higher premium?

Also is it legal to de-cat a car if cat converters were factory fitted. (see I told you I was paranoid!).

Ta...

Anyone around Wimbledon who would like to do me a big favour and demo a sports exhaust before I make my choice?

Graham,

My exhaust is pretty quiet up to about 3000rpm and then gets a bit too noisy to hear the radio, although I do have the original system, which isn't all that good.

I have only had the car for a few months and the old system, mild steel with a huge square baffle box was a bit like a sieve! So I am not too sure how the new one is in comparison. From what I can remember it is pretty similar to others I tested before buying the car I have.

I'll email you and see if you would like a demo, always up for a spin!

Kapadiy,

You can legally decat a car if it was built / reg before cats became a legal requirement (I think this was some time in 1993). I had my S3C decatted due to the cost of replacing the cats and it gave a bit more power and noise.

I informed the ins company who were ok as they did not view it as different to a standard S3. You should always advise any mods as they will need to know about anything that could be viewed as altering the performance - in many cases it may not affect the premium, but could cause problems in the event of a claim if you don't tell them.
