S3 lumpy running in top gear???

Can anybody suggest a remedy to the following fault on my S3? Cruising along in top at about 2200 rpm further accelleration & increase load tends to cause rough running which builds to what feels like a misfire. The only way to stop it is to remove foot from accelerator or change down to 4th. If revs then tends to reduces to 2200 rpm the same symptom occurs in 4th gear too.
Throttle pot replaced. All HT circuit replaced ie coil, leads, plugs, dist cap and rotor arm.
Any suggestions would be gratefully received especially from those who have experienced a similar problem.

Did you ever get to the bottom of this as I have developed a similar thing - same as you new HT leads / cap / rotr arm / plugs and coil all changed within last year as a matter of general servicing - have cleaned the AFM elements which were pretty much clean anyway and disconnecting the TP makes it worse ( been through TP issue before in the past so know what the symptoms are and this is different - particularly idle is spot on and rock steady).
Its only when trundling along at low revs at 70MPH ish that it sort of misses a bit and becomes kind of hesitant - put the throttle to the floor and it seems to get through it.
Any suggestions guys ???

Hi Kev,
Have not tried that yet as it took so long to get all the elctrics and ECU to stay where they should be I was reluctant to drop them down - I thought I would go for the simple stuff first - have had my shocks and springs fitted today and I am far from happy at the moment but will let you know the score off forum mate.

Did you use it yourself ??? Just had a quick read through the manual but I think it needs a bit more concentration than I can muster tonight - I must warn you that if you admit to knowing how to use it then I will bring it with me and fully expect you to show me when I drop off your chrome trim

My S3 ran roughly for several thousand miles but was OK when under heavy throttle. In my case I identified 2 problems:
1. The Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) if worn can cause very erratic running. Easily identified by removing the TPS plug from the sensor. The engine will then revert to limp home mode but if the TPS was the culprit will be a whole lot smoother.
2. The Ford connectors linking the injectors etc. to the loom. These are the ones positioned around the rocker covers. Mine were found to be intermittent and caused random rough running. Replaced them with good quality waterproof connectors and the difference was amazing.
Both items FORD!
