I have been in the market for new Engine Mounts for a couple of weeks and read the alternative parts listing and various posts on this forum, I found the correct mounts OK at TVRCarparts but at £20+ each + postage so looked further...
Clarenceboddiger (Ken) pointed to Quinton Hazel parts but I couldnt determine which was 1.1/2" and which was the 2" ones I wanted.

I ordered from my local motorfactor and have the beauties in front of me now (£20 the pair incl. nuts and washers)
The Label reads like this...

PB316
Cotton Reel Mount EM672 LRG
High Tech Parts
<barcode>
5 014002 101479

the EM672 being the QH part number... the nuts are 10mm and need a 17mm spanner - I bought a 72 point ratchet with a 5 deg click from Halfords at £11 eek just for this job

I hope this helps someone wink

Apparantley, so I heard somewhere, that the ford transit mounts do the job. However, I have not tried myself or looked at them but they are as cheap as the proverbial chips.

Thanks Jed - I had seen that link - they are not QH but are equivalent, they are 2" (50mm) and dont feel like jelly, so here's hoping...
So I better say now that I listed what I have done in case its of interest to others but is not a recommendation - Caveat Emptor !

good luck wink

Hello,

With a lot of help from a friend we managed to replace the engine mounts as well on my '92 S3. We tried to follow the instructions on the forum but could not loosen the J-pipes (clamps came of but pipes were not moving at all). Finally we replaced the rubbers by taking of complete brackets and mounts while leaving exhaust in place. We did take of the starter motor for better access to passenger bracket. Making access holes in footwell was not necessary. Job done in 3,5 hours

Before : sump touching ARB, already marks on the sump

Jacking engine :

After : sump 20 mm above ARB

We used the 50 mm rallydesign mounts and I hope they last forever !
I am now a HAPPY driver again !!!! ;-)

Had the ARB push into the sump on my S3 and the crank start to catch at the bottom of its throw, very strange situation caused by taking a mini-roundabout too quickly.

Thankfully cured by some metal glue and pulling rather than ripping out the sump, certainly worth getting the mounts sorted before it happens though.

I installed the tvrparts engine rubbers a few month back along with new stabiliser bar bushings. I find that on regular bumps the block hits the bar.
I thought of hightening the whole thing with 1 cm plates between frame and rubber but;
Also I suspect the block to move to much causing a sort of bucking (I'm shaken back and forth) when applying slight throttle.

Yesterday after reading this thread I ordered a set engine mounts from rally design. (hoping them to be firmer)

Does any of you have thoughts about the bucking thing? Could it be caused by engine mounting rubbers? Could it be a fuel-air mixture thing? (setting up the carbs right of my triumph spitfire cured a simmilar problem I had a while back)

Cheers

Hallo Olav,

I have no clue about the bucking thing. I can only say that the rallydesign rubbers are quite hard. After fitting them we let the engine rev quite hard and we could hardly see it moving towards the ARB. Of course this was without any load to the driveline.

Greetings from Helmond, Han

PS : will you join nuts&bolts too next Thursday ?

I to bought engine mounts from TVR Car Parts, they have been on the car for six months and have already collapsed. I have now ordered some from Rally Desing hoping they are better.

Yesterday I crawled under the car to check the gearboxmountings. I had to try to find where all the noice and bucking came from. Gearboxmount was fine. BUT the engine mounts REALLY had collapsed. I last checked in august and I could tell The sump has hit the bar a few times but there was a little under an inch clearance. now It's only a fifth of an inch (2,5cm = an inch) and the sumps paint is gone with obvious signs of hitting. The mounts haven't shifted at all but taken on a saggy S shape.
I only drove 2000 with it. The Schotland-tour was a beating with all the bumpy roads but In my oppinion It's cr@p and I will have to lift up engine, fiddle exchanging etc etc
Well enough grumpy stuff. I am awaiting my rally design rubbers and hope those will fair better.

Anyone know what mounts are top-notch?????

Cheers

Olav

Well my "beauties" are NOT thats for sure, already the clearance is down to 6mm and I have wrapped an old coolant hose around the ARB to cushion it so it does not hit the sump directly, but can see I need to do the whole performance again after just a couple of thousand miles Grrrrrr.... I will use the shims supplied by Clarencebodiger (thanks Ken) until I have time to replace the mounts, but I dont want that to be the permanent fix as I guess the mounts will collapse further yet.frown

I would also be interested in which mounts are the best. I definitely dont want to do it a third time...

finally I need to investigate further the "remove the brackets..." method of getting to the nuts as used by Han, as I was losing the will to live last time doing half a click with each of two spanners and still had to resort to a hacksaw blade to cut the stud. If that does not look easier, I will cut a hole in the footwell to get access to the bottom nut and just patch it over again when I'm done. scratchchin
