Location of panel light dimmer resistor??

Hello All,
The rotary switch on the das for dimming the panel lighting has three positions. 1) off 2) dimmed 3) full. Position 2 gives NO light on the panel and 3 gives full light. There is a resitor that is supposed to work in pos. 2 but it is obviously faulty. I tried to trace the wiring going to this resistor but I get lost. I don't seem to be able to find it.

Can anyone tell me where to look for the "panel light dimmer resistor"? I'm sure it not a simple small thing for there must be enough current to make it hot so I recon it is reasonably sized....

There are two of them, usually in the engine bay near the top steering coloum UJ .Some were placed in the footwells but overheated so they were moved to the engine bay so they could cool,but they get a fair hammering too,

FWIW i removed mine and now its on or off

Ah yes deffo - I've seen them. They get showered with crud off the wheels and mine certainly haven't got waterproof connectors, they are in a bit of a state. Surprised they work at all.
I thought those resistors were something to do with the ignition or injection system. Now I know I'll give them a clean, I was worried if I fiddled with them something important might stop working. Well something more important than the dash lighting.

If you mean the two big "stone" ones. According to me they are for the different heater fan settings...aren't they?

I have the diagram you referred to, but it made me look at it again and it seems indeed that the heater fan resistor is in the motor-thing itself..so it looks like the big stone-resistors are what I was looking for...thanks Pies!

On the same subject. I have an S3, which has had the panel light dimmer switch removed and by-passed so that te panel lights are always on. The illumination of the speedometer and rev-counter is less bright the four ancillary gauges in the middle of the dash by comparison - I guess that this is normal?

The 2 'stone' resistors on my car now serve no purpose but they are definitely part of the panel illumination design.

The dash dimming resistors on my S2 were dead, so the switch was Off,Off,On. I replaced the 2 ceramic resistors, located on the engine bulkhead on the drivers side, down towards the clutch cylinder, with 2 new 25W resistors. Works fine now.

I posted pics ages ago for this, but I just tried searching the S-forum and it does not go back far enough into the archives !

Let me know if you want more info on the parts I used.
