S3c door mirrors

My car has the electric mirrors from I think a Citroen CX, Jaguar XJ 220 etc. My difficulty is tightening the mirror onto the glassed-in base the fits in the door top socket. I have fond the 3mm grub screw but when the mirror is in the correct position the grub screw is facing in towards the window, so cannot be accessed. I can tighten it when 180 degrees opposite to that and then turn it round afterwards, which works but not then fully tight. Am I thick?!

Nope your not thick! It's a well documented PITA. Drivers door mirror always drops due to the constant opening, closing. Apart from taking the whole assembley apart, theres no real fix, some people have made a shorterned allen key affair, I just tighten the crub screw as tight as I can (but still has a tad of movement) and GENTLY turn the assembly around till its in position. Have to repeat every now and again. Never found a total fix with out taken it all apart.

the easy way....

tighten (but not completely) the upper grub screw whislt you can get to it easily (ie no cutting down of allen key)...... rotate mirror round to where it should be..... it is stiff to move but it will.

Drill small hole through the metal of wing mirror on opposite edge to grub screw... insert small self tapping screw and tighten... Pull black plastic cover back into place and hey presto done for ever....

Oh did I mention it takes about 5 minutes max
