gear box oil changes
Discussion
My newly purchased (first TVR) S2 is in at peninsular autos for service/general sort out and I requested the gearbox oil changed. I was told that the gearbox doesn't have a drain plug and changing the oil is rarely done only topped up. Any comments? The car has done 45k in its 12 years, I would have thought a change wouldn't be a bad thing. Any additives anyone recommend for the gearbox? Also I feel like an anxious parent when my car is away, is the normal for TVR owners?....

Starts with "boll" ends with "ocks". Gearbox oil should be changed regularly.

I'm afraid so, yes!

The gearbox can't be drained uless you employ the services of a pump to rid it of the old oil, but without being able to flush the box it's debatabl how valuable this would be.
When I last had mine topped up by WLA's (FOC one Sat am - bless em !) the guy who did it used a pumped drum of oil and managed to evacuate some of the old cruddy oil out of it. His comments were that he would tap the bottom of the box and put in a drain plug.
It's tempting and one thing I've considered doing when and if I need a re-con box.
The oil level should be lower than 5mmm below the bottom of the filler plug hole. I found that when mine was low the box was awful and lot of the symptoms described on this forum about gearboxes are more to do with the oil level than anything more major. Such as problems getting 3rd and 4th, mine was the same until I sorted the oil out and now it's fine.
Cheers
