What does the switch do

The switch in question is the interior light door switch.

I have a new switch which is supposed to be for an S3C but the mounting hole doesn't line up with the existing fitting. I don't really want to have to remove the door in order to drill a new hole.

Audi 80 has them, I believe 1994 model, but I've seen them recently on other cars too (owner was still in it though..bugger)
