Hmmmmmm. Well after having a quick price check on the parts (approx £60 plus VAT) I would say that they most definately are having a giraffe. Lets say £35 per hour labour that would still give them 14 hours to do it in! I would say that the job should be done in less than 2.

I replaced the pump on my S2 last summer. The pump was about £100 from TVRCarparts, and i spent about £30 on new coolant. It only took a couple of hours to do and was fairly easy to do. Not sure if the layout on the S3 if different from the S2, but i can't imagine they would be too different.

It's not a big job to replace the water pump. We've done it twice on my S3C the most recent being earlier this year and incl draining the system, etc it took under 1.5 hours - you don't need to take off the exhaust or anything. Jack up the front end of the car and let the bonnet open more widely than usual - rest its nose on a cushion or something so its not all the weight on the hinges and its much easier to get at. The pump/gasket was £34.5 plus VAT so not a bad result. The only potential problem is if one of the bolts shears as happened last time we replaced one and we then had to pull off the crank shaft pulley to get at it but you shouldn't have that problem unless you are very unlucky. Based on the above and new antifreeze its about £45 in total.

Does anyone know what the original manufactor of the water pump is? Searched on here and TVR S list, but not getting 2 part numbers the same? I'm after the genuine part not aftermarket. Thanks for all the feedback guys, appreciate it. (Colin, that was my face when he called me back regards to the quote!)
Per the S parts list a replacement is Motaquip VWP426
The original is a Ford part from a Granada 2.9, take yours off, it is dead easy to remove and take it to your local Ford Main dealer and match it up. Otherwise find a good local Ford independant and let him replace it for you. After all it should be an engine that both of them are familiar with!

PS If they charge you more than £200 for the whole lot including Anti-Freeze then they are taking you for a ride.
Do it yourself will cost very little in comparison, two hours max, do not forget the gasket and have some silicon sealant ready to act as an extra gasket seal.

It's a bog standard Ford granada 2.9 pump. I bought a pattern one on ebay for £20. Antifreeze cost another fiver or so. Took a couple of hours work probably (well it took longer but only because I was faffing about with exhaust manifolds at the same time).
I think the ford price is about £80 for the part. add an hour and a half for fitting and I think that the previous estimates of £200 are probably about right.
£540 is a total pisstake. Not uncommon whenever garages see the TVR badge. I am constantly amazed at the prices I hear of people paying for bits.

I've done mine twice so far, once when the old one leeked (engine still fitted) and once because I had the engine out and it was easy to do while it was accessible.

Not sure whats happened yet but got mome from a drive tonight with water pissing out a hose. Thinks its attatched to the water pump.
So not sure if the pipes cracked or the water pump is knackered !
Uumm, question. When the water pumps finally gives way..what will you experience ?
(i know water comes out but is there anything else to look for ?)

The pump has a "tell-tale" - a drilled hole on the bottom of the "nose" that comes out inside the pulley. When the pump seal fails, water usually leaks out of that hole - it drips on the pulley which then sprays it everywhere. You can check by stopping the engine (very important that bit!) then feeling the underside of the nose and the inside of the bottom of the pulley, and see if there's any water / antifreeze.
Otherwise the pump can leak round the gasket (it's held on with 10 bolts) or one of the hoses.
