After sitting in the garage for a few days, my car wont start. When I turn on the ignition , the usual 3 second noise from the petrol pump cannot be heard and no fuel is being delivered to the engine. Other than an obviously knackered fuel pump, is there anything else worth checking out before going to this expence? Any ideas lads? Thanks.

Hi There,

It is more than likely that there is nothing wrong with the pump.The pump fitted is the standard Ford unit which has to be said is amazingly reliable.It is much more likely to be the conections onto thepump itself. TVR in there wisdom have fitted the unit in front of the nearside rear wheel (really good design)Check the conections and more importantly the condition of the earth wire.They also suffer from the earth wires corroding,the copper strands on the wire appear to go black,this is a chemical reaction that happens over time and there is little you can do to stop it (except maybe replace the wire) If this has happened,rub with some wet n dry and install a new conector.If you can solder one on this will be even better as the solder doesnt oxidise as much.
While you are about it, chech the condition of the fuel hoses, especially the pipe from pump to engine as this is carrying fuel at high pressure to the injectors.

Check the fuel pump relay (Ford). Mine failed a few years ago with the same symptoms. After replacement, I opened the old (still sealed) one up and it was full of rust. Thanks, Uncle Henry.

Thanks lads,is it a Ford pump fitted to the V8S? I would have thought a Land or Range Rover unit? However, Im going to have to strip it down and test the pump off the car. The V8S pump is situated above the rear axle and there is an inertia switch on the front bulkhead which seams ok. Eric Benn.

So did I!..3.9 with Ford part?? never heard of it!

It is actually a Bosch unit. Common to many cars including XR3i's I believe. The rover ones are generally all intank pumps and would not fit.

No pump? Chcek the immobiliser isn't taking the mickey!

Well lads, guess what was wrong, would you Goddam believe it? Loose spade connector on the underside of the Inertia unit fitted to the bulkhead.Cars,eh??
