Ignition timing (S3)

Does anyone happen to know ignition timing figures for an S3 at higher revs? The Heath manual indicates 8deg BTDC (4deg to compensate for unleaded) static timing, but doesn't give any figures at higher revs. I wanted to check the advance etc is working OK so wondered what it should be at say 4k? Any ideas?

According to the 'ford service training' manual, ignition timing for the 2.9 without cats is 12 degrees if the engine is set to 97 octane rating, 8 degrees if the engine is set to 95 octane (both at 800 rpm). for the version with cats, the ford diagnostic computer has to be connected, set to the service program. In the service program the timing has to be 15 degrees at 900rpm, but this doesn't say anything about timing when the engine is running normally. The manual doesn't give any timing curves, but ignition is governed by the EEC-IV engine management computer, so you'll have to assume it works as long as the computer doesn't give any fault codes. You could check if there's any change to the timing at all when you rev the engine. If so, apparently the system works fine.

I checked it tonight & it is showing 8 deg at idle which should be fine. At 4000rpm it shows an advance of about 36deg. I'd still be interested to know if that's normal if anyone has any ideas?
