Fuel sender unit

The fuel sensing on the S has never been that wonderful but I have got to understand it OK; when it is full to the top it sometimes reads at the bottom and after some running jumps up and down and then starts to read Ok. Yesterday I was out in the Tiv (roof down - super!!)and as it was fairly well brimmed the gauge did its usual nothing then flicking about occasionally but after 30 miles or so it started to read absolutely full and continued to be stuck at the top all the way home. I must be a couple of gallons from full and it would usually have been reading OK by then so I wonder if there is a problem? Does anyone have any idea of the failure mode of the sender units (I assume the reading means the sender is effectively shorting out or pretty well doing so) and also are they still available/price etc??
Maybe the problem will go away as the tank level drops but just in case any info appreciated.

take a look here where there is some detail about testing for faults before actually changing the sender unit...

look in the "technical bits" in the left hand menu. its top of the list.

I had a faulty sender recently although the gauge was dropping to zero ( the 'wiper' arm on the variable resistor was not making contact and going open circuit ) You could sometimes get it to work by banging the tank near the sender. Got a new one from Tvrcarparts, took half an hour to swap. Most of that time was draining the tank.

Thanks for the info. I have had the unit out some years ago to adjust the reading so should not be too difficult. Can you remember how much the unity was gifdy and did it come with a new seal/locking ring?
It looks as if I will be off to Chatsworth having noted the mileage etc in case it doesn't make a recovery on the way ..

The new unit plus the sealing ring was 57 quid incl. VAT although the sealing ring has to be ordered separately - it isn't included with the sender. I reused the locking ring.

I'm crap at remembering mileage/when I last filled up so money well spent. The future Mrs Gifdy would not be happy walking to the nearest petrol station
