Seized Clutch

Took the car out the garage yesterday and found the clutch is totally seized. The pedal isn't stuck down it is totally solid. I can't push it down at all. Any suggestions before I start stripping it down ?

Maybe filling the reservoir with brakefluid? If that works no doubt there's a leak through wich the fluid dissappeared.

hi this is quite common the clutch plate has stick to the flywheel.now before you strip it down try this..start the car warm it up to normal and turn it off have the car facing down the road preferably a quiet one put the car in 1st gear hold the chutch down and operate the starter the car will lurch a bit but should start and move hold the clutch down and gently dab the throttle quickly several times and this may just release it dont jump on the throttle as you could damage the gearbox If this does not release it you will have to pull it out of gear to stop it I have done this several times and its never failed good luck

hi disregard the pervious post i mis read your problem i did not realise you could not push the clutch down

If you cant press the pedle its almost certianly the master cylinder that's seized up.

Agreed. Loss of fluid does not cause solid pedal.

If the master cylinder is the same as my S2 then it is attached to the pedal by a removable pin, under the bonnet it attaches to the car with a couple of bolts. Now From what I have experienced in the past, to check the cylinder you have to remove the pipe, taking care not to get fluid everywhere and then see if you can press the pedal down. Alternatively drain the system and try it, hope this helps.

I would look at the master cylinder first as the clutch is a B$%£"!D to change and as has been said yours is probably ok anyway.

did you get to the bottom of your problem? what was causing the clutch to be stuck? same thing happened today to me. i have a 91 v8s and it drove normally until this morning, i stopped for petrol and when i set back off, i did 1 gearchange and the pedal went solid. any help or advice would be most welcome, thanks Roy

please disregard last reply, i have identified both slave and master cylinders(master cylinder being the culprit) and puchased them off the internet to replace. not bad prices either £22.00 for both inc vat, thanks anyway regards Roy
