Emissions

I have read before that there are some excemptions from strict emissions compliance for TVR's. I think I read on this forum previously that ther is a paragraph in the MOT bible somewhere.

Anyone know what page or section this is on as it would be very useful to me right now.

There isn't any exemption from emission tests for TVR, only the fact that they don't have cat converters on the early cars (that will mean most S versions)so the limit on emissions is that much higher than cat fitted cars.

My S1, when properly tuned up, passed with flying colours and still pulls like a train.

Lots of power doesn't mean high emissions if you do it properly, and it saves a bit of fuel too.

Well maybe, but I think that depends on the level of tune and modification. Mine provides nearly 280 bhp (rr as Austec) from a 4ltr thanks to HarryW's sterling work over the last few years. Emissions are fine at 2000rpm but slightly over at idle.

I'm sure I'll get it sorted.

Interesting what you say about no exemptions though. I daresay you are entirely correct but I specifically reading a post here some time ago where the PHer said he'd actually seen it printed in a testers manual... Bizarre because it does sound unlikely.

Yep
My s3 failed miserably but my Ford trained mechanic sorted it in about 3 minutes, he did however say "bloody TVR trust them to run the airflow meter upside down to confuse people"
Not only did it drop the emmisions well below the limit, the car had never run better.
There is also a proper setting up proceedure for the RV8 on the airflow meter but the readings vary depending on catted or not.
Joo did mine but plenty of others have the knowhow as well.

I'm sure I remember that the MOT emission test has an allowance for test to be done at higher rev's than idle ? Is that the exemption you are thinking of It's not reallly an exemption, just an alternative for the test......

My V8S killed a test machine a couple of years ago with its emissions - they had to cancel the rest of the whole days tests as it was very dead......... I took it down the road to an MG specialist who measured it, said it was fine and gave me the print-out. The original garage shrugged their shoulders and wrote the ticket. Now not possible of course, with the new computerised system.

You could mention to the MOT tester about the option for "higher than idle" rev emission test. Of course this might all have gone with said new computer system
