Another S being rebuilt
Discussion
Another S is being rebuilt....
When I purchased my S3 I knew it needed attention to the outriggers and trailing arm. As the price was reduced accordingly I decided to buy it. Better to buy one that you know needs attention than buy one that looks good but under the Hammerite there is a nightmare waiting to be exposed. I also needed a new project so it seemed ideal
Ran it for 6 months then started the body off rebuild. What was worrying is that when I purchased it there was only one place I could detect a hole in the outrigger and that was O/S right in the corner. Removed the body and the outriggers were worse than that. Makes me wonder how many people are running around with holes in their outriggers.
Here they are before going into the bin.
I was just going to replace the outriggers and give it a lick of paint but in the garage I got a bit carried away and it is now looking like this will be stripped to a bare chassis. So much for having it back on the road in 4 weeks. One problem I didn't expect was removing the powdercoat. Where it isn't damaged it has adhered well but unfortunately the lover rails all have some chips in them so it will be stripped to bare metal. A blow torch is the best way I've found of removing the powdercoat.
The list of parts required or lined up so far is: servo, 260mm discs and calipers, new camshaft, all new brake pipes, new fuel pipes (one is partly worn through
) , new clutch plate, gearbox gaskets and oil seals, LSD, new shocks and springs (found that one is leaking), fuel filter, steering rack gaiters, track rod ends, new carpets....
I also have an alluminium bell housing because I thought I could put the car on a diet. Having lifted one front suspension assy (arms, upright, hub, brakes etc) I don't think a few kg will make any difference so I'll not bother.
Tomorrow I'll remove the rear suspension and buy some gas cannisters - I'll be needing them.

Hi Jed
great pictures (if a bit scarey) and your website story sounds oh so familiar.
where did you get your front discs at £12 ea ? I'm looking for new ones and will probably use Brakes International on line but the discs are slightly more than £12. (mine are the standard 240 dia vented)
keep it up and good luck

Kevin,
The 240mm discs were £12 a pair and I picked them up at Stoneleigh Kit Car show last year. Worth looking on ebay because there are usually loads of that size at good prices. The original discs were glazed and pitted where the pads had touched ove winter and the new discs made a huge improvement. It would actully stop if required.
I like your interior - looks very familiar.

Yes they could be twins ! what colour is your exterior do you know ? yours looks darker than mine and i was told mine was "Quartz" but I cant see a matching Quartz at Halfords... nearest I could see was Citroen Quartz but that looked a bit light.
I made a gearstick gaiter as well... easy really and worth the effort
keep the diary up to date mate, I will be referring to it I think

Ketrvin. - mine is storm grey - no idea what manufacturer used it though.
I'd recommend that everyone who hasn't done a full body off rebuild checks out their chassis. Key points are the outriggers as you all know but also check the rear trailing arm mounts that are welded onto the chassis. In particular the inside mount of the outside pair and while you're at it check the member that the mounts are attached to. There is a lovely dirt trap on that "inside mount of the outside pair" and I suspect that quite a few cars will be poorly in that area. You'll need to put it on axle stands and remove the wheel to get a good look I guess.
