boiling engine part 2
Discussion
now that i have changed the caps round on the swirl tank and expantion tank the car runs with a temp of between 50 and 90 on the gauge is this to cool for a tvr.
the bubbling noises and loss of collant have now gone and it runs great plus for some reason it has a more steady oil pressure reading too
(and the pressure cap is on the expantion tank and not on the swirl tank)

The pressure cap should be on the swirl pot as others have said. Check that the top most hose on the swirl tank goes to the expansion tank rather than the next one down. I refitted these two hoses the wrong way around and I found that the system only worked with the pressure cap on the expansion tank with the hoses connected like that - it's still wrong though.

yeah but think about it, the last port of call is the expantion tank so it should run its course and if theres any pressure it goes out there but do tell me about the top pipe as that may me wrong.
as you look at the swirl tank from the wheel arch the very top pipe facing you.
on my car this goes on to the front of my engine?????????????

That doesn't sound right. When I get my head together this morning and it stops raining I'll go out and check my car and take a photo of the pipes and where they go. You can then compare that with yours and hopefully get the pipes going to the right places.
I totally agree with your reasoning on the expansion tank being the last port of call except that it's wrong according to the steve heath book, the opinion of everyone else who helped me solve the same problem when I had it and the way the car came out of the factory. It still looks stupid to me but with the pipes connected up the right way around, the pressure cap on the swirl pot and the other cap on the expansion tank it does work.
I'll get a photo togther later this morning.
Arse, I've just realised the clocks have gone back and it's 7.15... doh.
(I've posted it on here btw and not replied to your email just in case I'm wrong and someone corrects me rather than trying to be rude by not emailing you direct).

Right then, if you go here...
www.cwork.co.uk/mark/cars/tvr/index.html
...you'll see 2 pictures (of about 90k each) showing how my hoses are connected.
I hope this provides a reference for either someone telling me I've got it wrong or hopefully helping you connect it all up correctly.
Good luck.

Well that's the same as my 89' S2, easy to tell the top pipe coz it's the one who's hose clip fouls the pressure cap (and has cut my finger on occasions ).On a slightly different note I will be getting some alloy swirl tanks made (amongst other things)in the near future anyone interested?

Careful lads if replcing a new radiator cap on swirl tank. I bought a new one from halfords during the summer (15 lbs rating)to replace the old tarnished one already in situ. The result was escaping coolant and overheating with most coolant being pushed up through to the expansion tank and out on to the road. The problem-an incorrectly rated radiator cap supplied by Halfords. The solution-dont contact Halfords, the wee lassie on the phone didnt give a "Castlemain xxxx"The solution, clean up tarnished cap with wet and dry and replace. No more problem. Whats that old saying, "if it aint broke, dont fix it" EB v8S
