Hi again,
my dad saw my 'new' S and wondered whether a rollover bar would not make it much safer. Just for road use mind you.. no racing.
Does anyone know:
- if the windscreen and its supporting pillars are structurally designed to protect for such an eventuality?
- what this may cost to install?
- where to do it if it makes sense?

No, the winscreen surround is not structural.

AFAIK the only properly designed roll hoop is/was made by Rollcentre to fit S3/S4/V8S and supplied by Tower View.

Mine is a Roll Centre Roll bar, I didnt fit it, but I believe it costs about £600, give them a call. It does make the car feel much more taught and does eliminate some of the scuttle shake. I covered mine to match the interior as I didnt like the look of it, now I quite like it especially as it provides more protection in the event of a bad accident.

I would say from a safety point of view its a very good addition and your family will feel better for you having it. Personally I do think the lines are spoilt by the roll bar, although I like it better now its trimmed to match interior. Hope this helps.

V8Smith - what does you roll bar attach to? Can't make out if it is fixed to the seatbelt upper anchor point or not. I suspect not but I would be interested to know. Lifting the body off mine this weekend so I'll have a good look round for suitable mounting points. A roll bar is something I need so that I can get it on to some track days. Some organisers are insisting on roll bars on softtops and I'm not going to disagree with that.

I've never had anyone insist on proper rollover protection at any track day or sprint, but IMO it is a wise investment. The best places to mount them are onto the lower seatbelt mounting point and through the rear parcel shelf onto the chassis. A lot of attention went into packaging mine so that you can still use the original seatbelt, don't lose any headroom, can see out of the back window, rear strap aligned with the seat center line, at the right angle etc. There are plenty of ways to get it wrong.
