Thermostat replacement on 2.8 S1

After taking all my cooling system apart, getting new recored rad fitted and waterpump fitted and pacet fan the Tiv is cooling lovely, summer no probs with overheating at all.

The problem is with the thermostat, or lack of one. It was missing when I did the job, removed by last owner because of heating up too much. And thought it would be fine.

Nope, too cold in winter now doesn't get warm unless stood still.

I got a new one but noticed that no rubber ring to locate the thermostat in its houseing.

Does it need one to fit? can I improvise or it is ok to fit without it?

I had this problem a few years ago on a Capri. If memory serves me right I had to buy a thermostat gasket set which supplied the front and rear gaskets for the housing and a new rubber ring. Not sure if you can still buy that set, it was a long time ago. I think the rubber ring is required to hold the thermostat in place at least but I never really worked out whether it was supposed to sit in front or behind the thermostat !

Have a look at www.zone.ee/scorpiomanual/ under Cooling, Heating etc. Looks like that ring seals the thermostat in the housing and prevents seepage when the stat is closed.

The previous owner of my S2 changed the thermostat in 2005. according to the bill from the Ford dealer 'F6588962' is the partnumber for the thermostat and 'F10922262' is the partnumber for the rubber ring. The ring was 71 pence. So apparently the ring is or was available separately.
