I am going to get my clutch changed in early Jan... 91 S3c.. does thew engine need to come out or not... it will be done using ramps etc so no problems with access. Just need to find out if propshft can be removed and box split without the whole lot coming out.... and without cutting any chasis rails etc.

cheers

Hi.

I Changed the clutch on my S3c on Thursday. And despite what the book says and having a fully equiped workshop with two post lift etc to use we could not get the gearbox out or the propshaft off.

There is not enough clearence to slide the prop past the diff, and the gearbox fouls on the cross member mountings. You can only slide the gear box back about 2 inches and that is not enogh to get at the clutch so we ended up lifting the engine and moving it forward. It was still a struggle though.

The best way is to take off the bonnet and lift the engine out. I think that would save a load of time and trouble.

I hope that saves you a load of hassel.

Ive got a lovely light clutch now though so well worth the effort

Good luck Mick

thanks for the heads up....

had one price of about £500 + vat so far but want to get another to compare. I wanted to know if it was engine out or not from the point of view of man hours...

cheers

If you've got as lift you could get the engine out in a couple of hours without to much trouble. So a day in the garage with the right jacks lift etc should see it done with a few tea stops. The clutch is standard ford granada 2.9 and is easy to find at reasonable cost.

Regards Mick.

the lifts etc will be the ones at the garage. I just struggle with the time to do it myself so I will leave it to them!!

I had the clutch on my S2 done by Guglielmi (Daventry) a few months ago, they managed to replace it without taking the engine out. They cut the old mounts off, dropped the gearbox, then fitted new mounts. This means if it ever needs doing again it will be an easier job!

I managed mine a spell ago by dropping the diff, sliding out the prop shaft(just!) and dropping the gear box. Done on axle stands!
It was a bugger to do with TVR having welded a short crossmember tube into the chassis directly where you want to seperate the prop and gearbox. Why oh why didn't they nut and bolt this section in? Prop just won't clear either end and no room to move it to either sid, up or down.
The gear box weights about one ton if you are tired and on your back trying to put it all back together again.
I remember thinking if ever it needed doing again I would go the engine out route even at the cost of fiddling with the manifold bolts was the price to pay. Bit of a pig either way!

Its not too bad yet.. but when I pull away hard from junctions it is starting to slip... ie the revs are running high but it isn't putting the power down on to the road... its not smelling bad yet but it can't be anything else... don't want it going miles form home. I have had a price of £500 + vat to get it done at a local independent who does a lot of TVR work.

Get it done now before you start looking at getting your flywheel refaced as well
