Sorry, dont know re the correct oil, but I would not think there is much to be gained buying expensive gearbox oils, I would suggest the tolerances in a gearbox are much greater than in the internals of an engine,also other than mechanical there are far less pollutants to cope with in a gearbox then in an engine.

On the WSCC forum there are lots of discussions on oil for the type 9 box ( doesn't type 9 = type N?? ).
The recommendation there is 75-90 stuff but make sure it is GL4 spec and not the GL5 stuff. The latter apparently causes synchro wear issues because it is more slippery but I can't comment on that. I can comment from experience that running GL5 in a T9 box has caused baulked gear changes when at high revs - circa 6500rpm. Draining the box and filling with GL4 resolved that problem.

Jed, very interesting thanks... I'm sort of sold on the idea of fully synthetic but as yet all the 75/90s have specified both API GL4 and GL5 spec such as Silkolene Silktran5 www.opieoils.co.uk/performance_lubricants/silkolene.aspx. Which GL4 did you end up using?
I ended up using the Halfords own brand 75/90 GL4 stuff on both cars. Reasons being that a) the Westfield was being sold and it was cheap. b)the TVR box was almost empty and it was all I had. When I rebuild the car over the winter I'll open the box and see what the condition inside is like. A previous owner was advised to use ATF oil but there seems to be mixed views on that.
Forgot to mention that the S owners handbook specifies GL5 oil. Hmmm...
The problem seems to be sorting fact from myth. Maybe its best to go to your Ford dealer and get whatever they supply?
