How to price my S3??

Hi,
Hope someone can help.
I need to sell my S3 and a friend might be interested so I'd like to work out a fair price. I seem to think I once saw a list of 'who'd bought what for what price' on Pistonheads, but it was ages ago and I can't seem to find it now. If anyone knows what I'm talking about please could you point me in the right direction, or if you've any other (inexpensive) ways of working out what the car is actually worth, rather than what they are being advertised for....

Sadly, based on mine (and HarryW's) recent experiences, I reckon that your estimates are about £1k above what the asking price should be, and be prepared to negotiate on that. I know that they should be worth more, but just look at how many 'S's have been advertised for months without selling.

Saw your V8S at the Thornfalcon show yesterday.
Below are the prices being asked for S3/C from PH and the car club site from June/July 05 when I was looking. There were other ones but these are the prices from cars that stood out from their descriptions.
One of the problems now is the price of early Chims - look at the prices in the classifieds - there are several 4/4.3ltr down at £7,500. When I was looking for the S3 I was offered a Chim cheap (I think it was about 9k - he didn't want all the money up front). When I looked at Chim prices the cheapest was around 10k

Yes, I've watched them go on ebay too - around £4-£4,500 it appears. Mine's been advertised at £6250 (no viewers), and £5500 (no takers) so hence I'm wondering if I've got the price wrong, even though all the (maybe about 6) viewers have said they think it's fairly priced...
Thanks, I've really appreciated the advice. Another question if anyone has an opinion - the only thing which I think is mildly off-putting about my car is about three large stone chips and 'tired' carpets. Would you get the work done or reduce the price??

I think (and I'm sure I'll be corrected if I'm wrong) that you need to target your advertising towards car-literate folk - and that discounts ebay. Thanks, I've really appreciated the advice. Advertising on here, the TVRCC site/magazine and specialist press should get you better results. Try your local TVRCC meet as there are usually a few prospective buyers. Perhaps the time of year just isn't right to sell?
Good luck anyway. Must be demoralising, and something I'm not looking forward too.

Too optimistic on the earlier ones I'm afraid.. More like 4-5k for a very good S1-S2, down to 2k for poor condition. Bear in mind you can buy very driveable Chims for 7-8k these days and it is denting the S Prices.
Ive got mine up for sale at the moment, and as soon as I put the add in the s link disapeared from the adds.
But if I search on tvr there in there. Any ideas?
As for value's I dont think any of us should let a good S go for less than 5k. Look at what people are asking for TR7's and MG's and then say a 5k S is expensive.

Unfortunately, anything is only worth what someone is prepared to pay for it at the time you want to sell it. Comparisons to MGs, TR7s etc are only valid if you consider how many are for sale versus how may want them. Subjectively, I agree with you, but I'm advertising a really nice, reliable S3 for £4.5k and the phone isn't ringing off the hook. There are loads out there at the moment and the buyer is spoilt for choice at the moment. I wish I was buying one now instead of 3 years ago!

Thanks for your honesty - mine's been for sale since spring, so I've had a bit of time to test the market. I've been very keen not to undersell the car as I absolutely love it and would rather keep it than give it away... However, having tested it all summer I'm beginning to wonder how low you have to go... Initially it was £6250 as that seemed to be what others were going for. Then reduced to £5500. Everyone who viewed commented that the price was comparable with others they were viewing, but... no one actually bought it. Even though I thought that the price was more than fair the fact that no one bit my hand off told me that there must be cheaper ones out there...
Anyway, I've agreed to do a swap with the mate who wanted it - with a Land Rover Defender! He'll keep it up for sale but in Manchester, where I just feel there might be a few more viewers than out here in the sticks of North Yorkshire.
Good luck with your sale Spurs, and thanks everyone for the comments... Some people had been telling me that 'good examples sell straight away' and I'd been a bit offended on behalf of my very lovely vehicle! Seems there's perhaps just more supply than demand right now...

Just on Pistonheads at the moment - www.pistonheads.com/sales/71347.htm. I've just put it back on again (7 days ago) at a reduced the price to just short of £5K. It's still in North Yorkshire at the moment but it will be going over to Manchester by the end of October if I haven't sold it first.
Not trying to gain an unfair advantage through this posting, so if anyone else (Spurs?) wants to tell Grumpy more about their car then that's fine by me if it's within the rules ...

A buyers perspective.
As a potential buyer price is obviously always an issue, I have a sum to spend but want to keep a bit back as 'just in case money'. It really comes down to mileage and condition. I am prepared to pay more for one that has had a pampered life and the requisite protection from chassis problems. A decent service history is also very important and a new or long MOT does give a slightly higher confidence level with regard to outriggers and trailing arms. Spending a little on a MOT and a service to make sure it runs as well as it can during a test drive seem to me to be common sense. If I view a car that hasn't had a recent service and is running a little off, I will factor this into what I am prepared to offer.
The model does have a reputation for some weak spots as mentioned and anyone who has done a bit a background research should know what to look out for but I see few sellers covering these issues in their sales pitch.
A lived in interior is very different to a neglegted one and stone chips on the front are to be expected but factoring in a respray for bubbling laquer is another.
I think the current range is around £4500 to £5750 and it doesn't appear that S3's are making more money than S2's. There is a nice looking S2 in the TVR car club classifieds but at £6200 that does appear to be £700 to £900 above comparable cars.
I dont think that these cars are bought at random I feel that most buyers will have, like me, decided that they want one and that the model presses all the right buttons but it is a question of finding the right car.
I recently sold a Westfield (also a bit specialist) and the buyer stated that the amount of information I provided in the ad and the amount of detailed photos including the bad points helped him a lot in choosing. He was the first to view the car by the way and it was the first car he viewed (maybe I was just lucky) and I got £400 less than I advertised it for but got what I wanted ie I had built in a little negotiation money.

Thanks. Far less offended. Actually it's a very classy burgundy - I'm not into scarlet myself. Picture does show it a bit on the bright side. I wonder if that's putting people off - my friends saw it for sale and said 'i didn't realise it was pink inside'. It's really, really not. Anyway thanks for response - as a buyer can I ask you what the standard of vehicle you're seeing out there is - for example, when I was looking most had stone chips, several had really saggy seats with rips in, none had new carpets etc. Have you seen many yet? I'm asking just to work out whether my price is right and also I want to know what the expectations of a buyer would be at this price ie new carpets, no stone chips???
