Had a interesting drive last night, the ignition light has been glowing slightly for a while, I put it down to alternator as it goes out when you rev it, well last night it got very bright, and extremely bright when I rev it I disconnected the bulb as the panel was getting very hot. Then a on my way home the throttle cable snapped, I replaced it with the spare in the boot, but there is a small rubber thing on the pedal end, where does this go?

It doesn't go anywhere. Or should I say that I have never found anywhere for it to go and suspect it is jsut part of the Ford build rather than anything to do with an 'S'. I cut mine off the last 2 cables... Cheers Mark

How often do these cables break ?? Ive got an S2 and am now concerned I should carry a spare ! Ive never had one break yet but they are obviously a weak point ? which end of the cable generally breaks? Thanks Giles

I was told when I bought the car to get a spare, so I did. Got it from ford £14.30 part no. F6720349 from the invoice. Ford had it for ages I picked it up last week, good job really.

I had my S2 for 7 years before the cable broke (about 1 mile short of a Brands Hatch trackday). Of course I had been warned that it was a problem, but as it had never happened to me, I didn't have a spare. They usually go at the pedal end, because (as far as I can remember) of the angle at which the cable attaches to the pedal. See Steve Heath's book. Roy

I managed to get through 2 on my S3c, first one went at the pedal and the replacment at the throttle after about 1,000 miles! After this I alwys put a dab of grease on both ends when I washed the car.

I have done 26,000 miles in my S1.5 in the last 19 months and have broken 2. Both have broken in exactly the same place behind the pedal due to the angle of connection. The last one I fitted I have tried to subdue this angle by playing around with the angle that the bulk head bush is set at. The best solution I have seen is to fit a throttle stop. Pete Humphries has one he made from a curtain rail and associated fittings. I believe had hasn't had an issue with a throttle cable in ages. His is obviously a V8S and how different it is to the 2.9 cars I don't know. I also never carry a spare although I will soon for my trip to France. I do however carry mole grips/cable blocks etc to get me out of a squeeze. First one broke in rush hour traffic by Clacketts Lane on the M25. Sat in 5th at fast idle in th slow lane. Kept pace with the traffic. The last one was far more embarassing ! Sat at the lights next to a Max Power Nova I decided to have some fun as you do. As this guy set off I stayed along side for a while and then floored it to get the nose ahead, went for second, got it, nailed it and just as the engine was ready to unleash all it's pent up horses and send me rocketing towards the skyline, it snapped. 4000rpm on the clock and going good to standing the car involuntarily on its nose, the worst part being that I had to watch this Max Powered Jan Speed Nova sail past in a haze of blue smoke as I peeled my face off the windscreen. The word rhymed with farce !

If you are talking about the rubber bung, it goes into the hole in the pedal box as far as I can remember, I will post a picture when I next go into the footwell. Cheers LeeBee
