u/j`s and c/v joints replaced

I have now replaced the u/j`s on the propshaft, cleaned and re-greased the c/v joints on the drive shafts and replaced a split gaiter. The car feels great, no more rumbling and tinging noises. One of the u/j cups had no needle rollers in it at all, now I can get out and about and enjoy some I picked up a lot of tips from previous threads so many thanks to a lot of people who contributed in a roundabout way

Quickie for you though - I've been trying to track down a knock / rattle on mine which is getting progressively worse. Are any of these symptoms the same as yours:

The 'knock' increases with increasing road speed ie its rotational.
It disappears under both acceleration and footbraking - it stays when the handbrake is applied or when the car is coasting / freewheeling - either in gear or neutral.
At crawling pace, it almost sounds like a 'ping', as though a badly worn bearing / joint semi-locks up and then 'pings' as it releases.
At higher speeds, it sounds like a cricket ball bouncing around inside a tombola !
With car on axle stands, rear wheels off the deck, in gear and engine running, she's as quiet as a lamb...

Re-packed CVs and prop UJs with grease - CVs and prop seem OK with no excessive play anywhere..

Does any of this sound familiar ?

Would appreciate any thoughts mate..

Hello Neil, some of what you have said is familiar, the ping sound. I knew what my ping sounded like, so I started tapping things under the car with a screwdriver to try and replicate the sound and found it to be the propshaft. Changing the u/j`s isn`t to bad if you are going DIY. I fitted Quinton Hazel- 16103 u/j spiders and they were 15 quid for the pair, but they don`t have the grease nipple fitted. I had to drop the front of the diff to get the propshaft out, now I`ve already replaced the diff mounts so knew they were o.k. so it gives you a chance to check yours if they are old. I now suspect you have a propshaft related problem but of course I could be wrong. Give the propshaft a real good look over, mine didn`t have any appreciable play when I twisted the joints but when I pulled it side to side the u/j wear became evident. Sorry if I`m teaching you to suck eggs so to speak and I hope this is of some help to you, I`ve read your problem again and mine was very similar especially on acceleraton and being quiet while on axle stands. I really suspect u/j`s, maybe someone else can give us their thoughts on the subject, cheers mate hope all goes well.

It sounds like it could be propshaft related - that was high on my list of suspects. I did wonder whether knackered / missing needle rollers would be responsible for the 'pinging' noise at very low speeds..

I haven't dropped the prop right off yet (have to deal with the diff, as you pointed out) so maybe that's the next step.
