Flasher Unit Info S2
Discussion
Symptoms:-
indicators not working, indicator lamp on dash not lighting, hazard warning switch illuminated but didn't flash.
From looking at the wiring diagram (and later a simple test)I knew it was a knackered flasher unit, located flasher behind carpet panel on drivers side footwell, flasher unit had been taped in place in plastic socket and was loose tried pushing in further, still not working.Ok go and get a new flasher unit from a local car spares shop, they had one for a ford escort Mk3 3pins (numbered 31 ,49,49a) shouldnt be a problem.Fitted flasher still had the same problem, check diagram again, its should definately be the Flasher thats the problem.Confident (overly) in my diagnosis I took the flasher unit back, explained that it must be duff and was handed a universal ford/vauxhall unit(shorter than original but still has terminals 31,49 and 49a).Fitted unit ,still the same problem.
To prove my beleif that it was just the flasher unit I got a small piece of wire and shorted out the terminals 49 and 49a on the flasher unit socket, switched on the ign and indicated right, both indicators and panel light lit up,same for left side when indicating left, proof its the flasher so why didn't the bloody thing work then??.
ANSWER:-
For some strange reason the flasher unit (origional) has pins 49 and 49a reversed compared to the std ford units.this may sound obvious, and something I should have noticed straight away, but when you are looking at 3 terminals and tryng to remember 3 numbers and both units have the same numbered terminals on you tend to be distracted away from looking at their location.
Remedy:-
cut off the 3 wires from the original socket and fit good quality female spade connectors to the wires. The wire that has a 12v supply to it (with the ign on) goes on terminal 49,the black(earth wire) goes on terminal 31,and the feed out to your indicator switch goes to terminal 49a.You can now use almost any 3 wire flasher unit that operates 2 x 21w lamps.

thanks guys!
Yesterday after a long blast (with the roof off
) the right side started working again. Seems it has something to do with the wiring under the steering column... It's pretty messy and I dislocated it last week when I replaced the steering column bush.
Cheers
