I'm putting together a S series buyers guide for Classic Cars magazine and need a bit of owner input about running costs. What I'm after (from three people) is how much you've spent on maintenance over the time you've owned the car and what the main expenses were for. For instance, what I need to end up with is like this line lifted from the latest issue: "Steve Thomas paid £1930 to maintain his 1997 Elise for three years, including new rear tyres and replacement dampers". though I hope we can make it more interesting than that!

Not sure if you know but many PH members keep a history file on their car with costs listed.
If you click on a member's name, then click the My Cars tab and finally click on a car, their history will be displayed.

I think most owners will tell you that these cars are on the whole reliable if you take the time to maintain them.
A key thing for an owner is to look after the chassis, particularly the 'outriggers' that can rust where the spray from the wheels hits them and gets between the fibreglass body and the triangular metal plate that it affixes to.
A coat of waxoyl or similar is a very sound maintenance cost every year or every 6 months. This can be done at home, but I think most people, because of the mess involved, have it done as part of their service schedule. Typical cost for a chassis waxoyl is between £50 and £130. Depends where you go.
Mine has been very reliable day to day - the major cost by far is the petrol, because you want to drive them so much.
The great thing is depreciation is negligible, particularly among the V8s.
