When working on the rear lights yesterday I came across a cable sat loosely in the draining channel on the right hand side (if looking from the rear of the car) of the boot. It doesnt go anywhere and is uncovered wire for about 10 inches to its end. Its not frayed or broken away from anything and I am baffled as to where the other end goes and what it is there for! any ideas? (was thinking a manual option for the boot release or something?)

No, its a cable of the throttle cable style, rather than electrical. Bit odd - might drop previous owner an e-mail and see if he has any clues.

hmm.. logic would suggest a manual boot release... it's on the correct side after all.

Odd.. what happens if you give it a pull...? Have you found the other end of it?

no, havent traced the other end yet and didnt want to give it a yank (dont even think about a nob gag Podie!) until I know what its attached to.

Maybe it's a mechnical opener, so you don't have to have the ignition on? When I was looking at buying an S, I found one that had a pull like that... there was a catch to open it... you had to open the drivers door, at it was located there, near the door lock.

"old timer"...hmm... how come you're an old timer, and I'm a veteran gasser...?

err... all (?) early S-s have a manual boot release, mine was running off the "bonnet" catch under the steering column.

Cheers
Matt.

I thought Shnozz had an S3... therefore an electrical boot release...?

EDIT - this assumes the car was build to a certain spec, and not a monday morning or friday afternoon spec, or that the some parts were not available etc etc...

yep, mine is an S3 with electric boot release but wondering if the wire relates to a manual "overide" in the event the power fails and you need to get ya tools from the boot to fix it

The cars with an electrical boot release have a cable there to provide emergency access to the boot when the electrics fail. You can get at the cable from outside the boot, but I won't say how because some people don't like having this type of information advertised. If you look at the route of the cable, you'll probably work it out pretty quickly. Having got at it, you pull the free end of the inner which releases the boot latch.

cheers Pete - will follow the lead and hopefully track it down! Funnily enough I found myself in a situation the other week when the electrics packed up and my tool box was in the boot! Would have come in helpful!

PS - may end up e-mailing you if i cant trace where it goes!!!!!!!!

If you get stuck with a flat battery, you have a couple of other options that are a lot easier. With care, you can stick a jump lead on to the alternator main output terminal, this won't take enough current to turn the engine over but it'll take enough to open the boot. The other thing is once you know which relay opens the boot, you can yoink the relay out and hotwire directly across the relay socket if you get stuck.

thats assuming your jump leads arent in the boot too!!! i tend to keep sweet FA in the cabin so i can leave roof down in the summer when parked. Spare bulbs, fuses and radiator cap in glove box but thats it!

not sure what you are on about re the relays but sounds like the tales of a hotwirer! Not sure I am capable enough. Might just be better to call the AA
