I may have to replace my gearbox on the S3 as I am having trouble changing 1st-2nd and 3rd-2nd at any speed.
I was wondering, was the gearbox (Type N, or MT75) used on the S3 a standard ford box or was it modified by TVR?, and given that I do have to change the box is anyone aware of an upgrade to the standard gearboxes fitted to the S3s

Thanks in advance

I believe that the gearbox itself is standard Ford.

The selector has a peculiar extension to move the gearlever forward (the standard Ford position would put the lever somewhere under your armpit!) and I don't know what else that extension mechanism was fitted to. It might well be the standard Ford selector, reversed?

Can't help any more with this one, sorry

Is it definitely the box, rather then problems with the selector (dogleg gearstick) or the clutch hydraulics?

Although they talked about using the MT75, I don't think TVR ever produced a V6S with anything other than a Type N (sometimes also known as a Type 9).

Thanks for the info guys

I don't know what the problem is as I usually leave major thinks like this to the garage, but was trying to get some idea of the costs involved in solving the problem. Any advice on any techniques for identifying what the real problem is would be gladly received.

It's a TVR mod. The Ford stick is in two pieces with a rubber section between to help cushion the shock. TVR put a plate between the two to dogleg the upper stick back to a more usable position.

Lorian, prior to spending wads of money on a gearbox, check the clutch slave/master cylinders. Mine presented a similar problem which turned out to be the cylinder. I replaced this (under the car to the left of gearbox) for about £50 and it solved the problem.

Might be worth a thought, you never know.

Hi Mike
First thanks for the info, I spoke with the previous owner tonight as I recalled that when I bought the car there was reference to a replacement gearbox in the advertisement. The previous owner confirmed that he had a reconditioned gearbox fitted to the car less than two years ago. Based on this the master cylinder may be the way to go, is it an easy job to do, any advice gladly accepted

I had my gearbox removed and rebuilt under warranty and it wasn't cheap (for the warranty people) The car wasn't used enough before I got it...... If I remember about £1400 including labour (main dealer)

so try the other options first

Hi,
I had exactly the same trouble as you recently - could not get reverse without an almighty crunch and 1st, 2nd, 3rd gears very difficult - changed the slave cylinder and adjusted the push rod, obviously replacing the clutch fluid also - now sorted £32 for new cylinder ( Rover SD1 ) off the shelf at local motor factor and about 2 hours of me and a mates time.

Have you checked underneath to see if there are any leaks on the slave - the seals had perished on mine and although the resavoir appeared full it was enough to cause these symptoms.
