Car will start but it runs like it is on full choke and so wont run smoothly. If it doesnt start first time then it floods staright away. Bemused by the injection system and dont know where to start!!

You might also try the auxiliary air device which is effectively the choke on the 2.8. It's mounted on the front of the air box on top of the engine and looks like a metal bracket with an electrical connection on one side and a hose connection on each side. If you warm up the engine and disconnect the hoses then look through from one side to the other - you shouldn't be able to see any daylight. If you can then either it has seized open or the electrical supply to the bi-metal strip which closes it may be faulty.
In general the control mechanisms on the 2.8 are much simpler than on the 2.9 and are well described in either the bible or a relevant Haynes manual.
Hope thats of use.

They are found on 2.9 which have a far more complex electronic fuel injection system.
