I'm not happy. In for service and MOT today.
Good news - chassis, engine and most bits all A ok.
Bad news - Manifold gaskets confirmed as blowing , Exhaust has a hole (speed humps) , Ball joint needs sorting , Gearbox oil has little metal bits in it . Not noticed any problem, I'm now wondering if it was like that when I bought it - although it wasn't mentioned when I collected the car after it was serviced.
Cobblers, thats a poxy engine out job. Feck it no Christmas for the kids after all

The killer in the work you describe is the labour costs not the parts. So how about doing the work yourself? There are plenty of people here who will give advice and some even their time.
Manifold gasket replacement can be a bitch, but this is not always the case. Removing the exhaust should allow you to get it plated/welded then paint it yourself and put it back. Ball joints easy. As for the gearbox, wait till it breaks.
