cooling problems

I wonder if anyone can help me
It seems the cooling fan on my S1 has decided not to work and as a result the car has been overheating and generally dumping coolant everywhere. I managed to get it home before it fried itself but haven''t yet been able to pinpoint the cause. What I have done so far is;
1. Connect the fan directly to the battery to prove that it still work - it
does
2. Check the fuse - OK using multimeter
3. Connect across the thermostat switch connections to see if fan work - Can
hear relay switching but fan still does not come on.
Therefore I can only think that there is a problem between the fusebox and the fan connection (I’ve tried twisting the bullet connector to see if there is a bad connection.) If anyone has had something similar or knows where the best place to look next will be I’d be pleased to hear.

Double check the relay switch as this is known to fail. Have you checked the fuse. Then you could double check the Otter switch connections and check all the wiring with a multimeter.
If the fan is definitely working then it can only be a matter of either poor/broken swith or connection. It's always worth double checking all the earthing points around the engine bay.
I think Paul V had a problem with his fan and this was posted on the list under 'Fan', so worth having a read of that maybe.
Thanks, I'll double check the relay tonight (although I thought that if it was clicking then there was a good chance that it is OK). If it is the relay do you know the part number or what it was from.
As far as the earthing goes, the wires dissappear into the loom - any suggestion as to where it actually runs to earth? if it were a bad earth would this affect other items maybe? (haven't got the Bible here at work!!)

On my car you could hear the relay click, but it wasn’t connecting. On the S2 the high beam relay and the fan relay are the same, I’m not sure if they are on the S1 as I seem to recall them having a different fuse box, anyway if you have a relay with the same pin layout, swap them over them connect override the fan switch if it works you have the problem. How did you test the fan?
If you just connect the positive side to the battery and it works you know the earth is ok. If you have to connect a negative supply as well then look at just running a new earth connection.
Thanks for all the help folks. It was the relay after all. A quick swop with the headlight one and it was sorted (a much less tense drive into work today).
If anyone happens to know the part number or what its from that might be useful, otherwise I'll just take the old one along and try and get them to match it.
