remaping, worth it??

I`ve read about Pies having his S done at Austec, and am considering the same in the next two months, has anyone else gone down this route, what advice can you give, are the advantages that good?

Hi Clive,
Pies car is a V8 so slightly different, V8's are mostly remapped by Mark Adams with his Tornado chip, although not sure Colin went that route...?

The V6 mapping is done by Paul at Austec and from the results others had it seems well worth it? All found the cars much more driveable, its not only more powerful, there is more power everywhere and its much smoother. Ask Bridgedav hes had it done? Ive had my car remapped by Mark Adams and you really notice the difference low down, there seems to be power in every gear that wasnt there before and it feels much smoother when pulling too.

Id go for it, most S cars by now are down on power.....? And if you ever do come uo, give me a shout im about 2 miles from Austec?

Hi Mike, got a bit confused, it was Paul at AUstec I read about on the net somewhere, the s series site I think?
I am having the s resprayed in feb, so if I can keep some cash in the bank then I will see if I can get her booked in at Austec in march.I`ll let you know as and when, and let you buy me a coffee or two!!

Hi Clive Id be interested to know who is spraying the car, the job they do and the cost if you dont mind, its something I would like to do within the next year or so? Are you changing the solour or staying with the same??

Hi Clive

I have had the Austec 'Paul' treatment to my V6 S2. My overall feel is that it is well worth it, my car is quicker througout the range, smoother, cleaner internally and in overall better condition mechanically. I say this as a number of issues arose during the 2.5 days wy car was with them... broken throttle cable, throttle pots, coked up engine etc... However as Paul is passionate about getting the best he can from every car, he spends alot of time fettling until he is happy.

For example, my car had some high miles as a daily company car and had become chocked up with low rev running & low quality (95 ron) fuel. Paul used 3 or 4 bottles of 'special' cleaning solution into the fuel and told me to push it hard for a few hundred miles... afterwards i booked back in to Austec and Paul managed to find more power & torque which he knew was there but just had to be unleashed.

Personally i would have Austec do all the work on my S but unfortunately i live 150 miles away from them.

I would mention tho, that your expectations should be managed...... it is not a cheap route to take but it does really improve the car. If your committed to the car then go for it.

FYI - she is now pushing out a genuine 174Hp and 224 lb/ft of torque.

I reckon this puts her into the 0-60 of 6.5 and 0-100 of 17 secs region. I beleive she's as quick as most standard 350i wedges now..... but not the V8S !

Giles - Does the remapping affect your insurance?

Clive - This is something I'm considering so I'd be interested how you get on. BTW, I'm not that far from Austec so if you want somewhere to stay you can pitch a tent in the back garden. If it's not raining I can turn the sprinkler on

Not mine with Classicline...!... The figures quoted by TVR (NEW) and the figures we get as standard are vastly different...!

The Remap, brings the car effictively back to spec......


Plus a bit more in some cases..!

Agreed - no difference to insurance. In effect your making the car as good as it can be. Better than the Ford ECU will allow with its standard settings.

Ford wont fuel its cars in the way we want to, as the'y get worse mpg figures. Its a compromise. All we are doing is removing the compromise and making the car be the best it can. The Hp rating is no higher really....just realistic instaed on a dream !

Hi there,

I had mine remapped by Paul last year some months after a complete engine rebuild. Ignoring the cost of the rebuild you could still see it as quite pricey and don't expect the peak pull to rise significasntly or V8 performance. What you will get (as others have mentioned) - is a much smoother power delivery across the rev range (I get peak power pretty much all the way from 3000-5000 rpm) plus a much more modern feel to the drive. The 0-60 dash is definately quicker.

Would I go back to unmapped ? No way. Worth every penny.

Thanks for all your replies chaps, so to respond in order:
mike, the respray is being done by a mate who has his own paint shop, and the colour is going to be just a shade lighter than the present one.I`ll mail you some before, during and after pics.
s2 giles, thanks for the info, I may have to do some planning if the car is needed for more than one day, in which case.........
chris, your offer of a tent under your sprinkler would make me feel very at home!!

The remap should only taken about 5-6 hours....mine was just a bugger to set up right and other things kept going wrong.
