Lights Out. Switch? Or What?

My headlights don't work but if I hold the High beam switch on the high beams come on OK. Any ideas of where I can look for the mystery to be solved.

Hi, had this problem in my S2 a few years ago. The side light/dipped switch stalk end was rubbing on the dash when turning the steering wheel which eventually stuffed the switch. I had side lights, main beam flash but no dipped beam or constant main beam. Got a new switch from the scrap yard off the equivelent ford - escort/sierra I think, which fixed it.

I had this several times on my S1. The dipped beam current goes through light switch stalk and eventually melts the back of the stalk where the connector block clips in. I got bored of going to scrappies looking for old stalks so I wired in a relay and didn't have the problem again.

There did you wire the relay to?

Had a similar problem with my S3. I did the lot, checked the earths, all the bulbs, connectors under the bonnet, had the stalks off the steering column, nothing seemed to work. The eventual solution?

1) Locate fusebox
2) Push headlight fuse back into place
3) Wedge fusebox back into footwell

Try this first instead of spending 4 hours cursing and scrapeing knuckles

Its ten years ago but if I remember rightly there are two wires going through the stalk dipped beam switch, one that provides a +ve feed from the fuse box and one leading to the dipped beams. I disconnected the one that leads to the lights and ran a new wire from the stalk to the relay so that all the wiring through the stalk does is activate the relay. I then took a big fused +ve feed direct from the fuse box to one side of the relay switch and connected the otherside of the relay switch to the dipped beams. Then I fixed the relay somewhere under the dash.

certainly try the fuse & relay first.

took my s2 to Devon at xmas, stuck in traffic so after 6 hours with the lights on, the main beam started flickering then went out. switched off for 30 mins, put fresh fuse in & all was well.

Had it overheated ?
