seen the horror stories about the halfords ones so wondering where the best place to buy one is? and how much?

Got mine in halfords, HC601 if memory serves (dont quote me though :-) You will need a rubber sealing washer though as I dont think that model comes with one

Phill if you need said rubber washer let me know I will send you one I have a stack of them cut out from old inner tubes, work a treat !

Rower - that would be great. have e-mailed you my address. Haven't taken off the old one yet but anticipate that rubber will be perished and when i do a job I generally replace all parts like this to make sure its done properly.

Rod - thanks for that. Had read some stories about the pressure rating of 15 lbs being wrong on the Halfords ones and therefore not having a good seal. Obviously you have not encountered such problems yourself.

No, works a treat mate. Only word of caution I would utter is that if your current cap is old it will be weak (ie may be nearer 13lbs), so when you put on the new one it may show up 'weaknesses' in the rest of the system. i.e. I had a pipe go just after replacing mine as I was just holding on by the skin of its teeth

Come to think of it my water pump went soon after putting a new swirl cap on... hmmm.
