Impending V8S purchase
Discussion
hello chaps
looking at a blue v8s, a J Reg with 36000miles on the clock.
Main dealer is offering at £11995. Serviced, 12 months warranty etc
Just a couple of questions:
Should it have wheel arch covers?
The v5 says its is registered as a 290S (like my S2, now sold, upgrading you see!)
is this correct or could I be looking at an eleborate conversion? Everything else seems correct.
Could be back in a TVR. wah hey

Hi Ed,
According to the V5, mine states model as 290S too, so this may be usual. I checked against the service/warranty Handbook as completed by TVR Engineering, Blackpool when the car was first registered and the engine numbers, etc all match up, so no conversion.
Mine also has the wheel arch covers, although maybe a check in Steve's bible will clarify.
Hope you get that TVR grin back soon. Enjoy!
Cheers,
Mark
PS seems like a fair price, I paid £11k on a private sale, 1991 reg with 35k on the clock.
Cheers,
Mark

Ed,
Yes it should have wheel arch liners, all S series from S2 onwards had them.
Reg documents vary - mine states type as V8 S, but I have heard of V8s with other descrptions before. It would be worth checking with the factory, car club or getting HPI check done to be sure.
Good luck.

Sounds Kosha to me Ed .. Congradulations Btw...
Just got my V8S which is registered as a 290 S. I checked with the factory which confirmed the model as a V8S. They also give you little snippets like 'big valve engine', etc, which makes you happy but probably doesn't mean anything ! Mine has the inner arches. It's also the loudest car I've ever had, it's no exageration to say it hurts your ears when you really give it some welly.
My V5 is for: make - TVR
model/type - V8 S SPORTS
and it has the inner wheel arches, first regisrtered in March 94.
I believe like the previous posts that it is probably more a case of the factory not registering the 'new' model at the time and the DVLA recording system not recognising the V8S bit when they first came out , rather than anything dodgy, but you can never be too careful.
If you can tell who the original supplying dealer was (assuming they're not one of the many that have changed ) then they should be able to tell you more quickly than the factory from customer spec and servicing records.
SCLUB8 did the factory confirm those details by letter/email or phone, as I've tried unsuccessfully to get much in writing out of them when asking specifics in black and white.

If the engine number has a 'G' at the end it's got big valves !

I've been round the bouy a few times on this one if you check some of the previous threads, mine has HC at the end of the engine serial number. Which has lead to some confusion, as apparently the HC wasn't made then .
If you have an 'inside line' let me know as I've been trying to get some positive answers from various quarters to no avail.
Next step, in later in the winter/spring, is to get it looked at by Mark Adams et al to see whats what.

No inside line I'm afraid, the lady I spoke at TVR was checking my chassis no. (ooh err) when I was buying the car and just dropped it into the conversation !

Just checked and my engine number ends in G so big valves? If this is true, does anyone know if there's any difference in performance/output over the 'standard' engine?
thanks
Mark
The car has gone to Topcats Racing today for them to have a look over, may ask them if they know about a big valve 4.0ltr
