If it's only happening when cold, it may be the Air Bypass Valve (also known as the Idle Speed Control Valve). This provides more air (and therefore Fuel) when cold. They usually just need a clean-up inside.
Or it could be our old friend the Throttle Pot.

Firstly, welcome...
Assuming you've checked that the dizzy cap is not loose (and clean inside) and all the plug leads are pushed home tight then the usual suspects for poor idling or low rev running problems are the Throttle Pot, Air Flow Meters, Idle Speed Control Valve, Engine Coolant Sensor. The TP sits proudly at the top of the list.
Another problem which can result in these symptoms is poor electrical connections - especially within the connector block which sits in the vee at the top of the engine. Give this a wiggle and make sure everything is tight and that the connections are clean.
Many (if not most) of the V6 owners on here will have experienced similar problems in the past. When mine started playing up, the TP was replaced and the symptoms improved but it wasn't until I cleaned the heated wire in the top AFM that the poor running disappeared completely...

Thanks for the advise so far. The TP is new so I will begin checking all the other parts mentionned above this eve. I will admit that after a particularly tortous journey to work yesterday it was over heating and needed 1.5 litres of water this morning. I presume that this wouldn't help
