How can i love and hate the same car so much.

Engine ticking over and then cuts out. Re-starts briefly after pushing her out of the traffic queue but then dies again within 30 seconds. AA man has a look - no power coming through one of the feed leads to the coil. Try to follow lead but dissapears into engine bay somewhere. "get me home" solution is a bypass lead with a fuse bunged in it that I have to disconnect each time i stop so as to avoid the coil burning out.

Get back in the car and drives fine with the battery charge level a little higher than I noticed it was yesterday. However, no speedo or rev counter!!!!

I am now in the office and dont have steves bible on me which i shall read up tonight. Can anyone tell me why the speedo/rev counter would give up teh ghost at the same time? I am wondering if both cables are close enough together that maybe they have touched on the engine and burnt through simultaneously??

I cannot see why the coil and rev counter/speedo would be related in any other way?

Any pointers to stop me from crying?

Suspect fuse/fuse holder problem. Cannot speak for an S2, but on my S3 the rev-counter and coil are on same fuse.

off to pick my car up now

havent spoken with the garage but secretary tells me the damage is only £91 including labour to fix the bust fog light so it cant have been anything serious. just need to sort out a home made warning switch in the cabin to show the fog light is on to get through the MOT and then everything is sweet. Can try out my new RE720's then too!

Cant wait to pick her up

PS - thanks Peter for your thoughts - will let you know what it was just in case anyone else suffers the same symptoms.

melted fuseholder and wiring. Thought I could smell some burning for the last couple of weeks.

Funniest thing is the car has had an amusing characteristic for some years (the previous owner had tried sorting it on numerous occasions and at expense!) - the speedo was normal in 1,2,3 & 5 gear - but in fourth it jumped from 20mph to 80mph, all over the place. No explanation at all and if I had to judge my speed for a gatso I would have to change down or up.

Anyways, with the new fuses in and inline fuseholder its working perfectly!

I do ramble on.
