How do you get 'em off ......

S1/2 door mirrors that is. I have heard that a good pull should pop the ball out of the door mount socket, but on mine it seems this would have to be a very serious yank, possibly accompanied by a bit of leverage from a crowbar. Is there something I should loosen/release before getting too violent?
I then need to remove the mount from inside the door. This is well and truly plodded over with fibreglass. Any suggestions on how this is best removed?

Hi Tim.
I'm going for the Audi TT mirrors. I have a pair all painted up and ready to go and I have a scheme worked out for mounting them, but it does require a fairly clean inner surface to the door skin. Looks like I may have to do a lot of work with a Dremel grinder. A full size grinder would be much quicker but one slip and I'll chop the corner off the door!
I'll drop Kentish a line if he doesn't pop up on this thread.

Sounds interesting. Any chance you can take photos as you progress and let us see how its done?
Its a popular idea to change them for something a bit more attractive than the citroen ones but don't think anyone has shown us how.
Kentish's TT mirrors did look good, also some Mazda ones that were posted.Never actually investigated the present fixings behind the panel though have had the panel off umpteen times.
Guess its just a hollow tube end encased in a clump of glass fibre that you plan on cleaning off first before getting the tube free from the doorskin???

Managed to get the mirror head off last night. The secret seems to be: Release the plastic shroud from the mirror housing and squash it back to the door skin, hold a piece of wood (approx 30mm thick) between the socket rim on the body and the socket rim on the mirror housing and then pull the mirror against the wood. The wood stops it rotating so it jacks itself out of the socket in the mirror housing (which is much shallower than the one at the door end).
Now all I have to do is remove the mount from inside the door and fit the Audi mirrors. Simple!

just thought i'd join in, currently having mx5 electric heated jobby things fitted, found a specialist breakers up north, 35 quid each plus vat. if anyones interested i've got the number and they have plenty of others. as a result I have 3 (2 nearside 1 offside) mirrors that people may feel they can re-home.
