OK. Went to my local motor factors with all the parts numbers I got from PH to get some new pads and discs. When I got there 'sorry mate, they mean nothing to us. What are they off?'. And so it began.

'The bible' says the S is fitted with 260 mm discs from a Sierra, so thats what I got. Took it all to bits to find it was fitted with 240 mm discs. Put it all back together.

A further exchange of wrong discs (took it apart and put it back together again, right thickness, right diameter, wrong boss depth )and I gave up with the local shop who were having to order the parts in and getting a bit stroppy about it. Phoned around a couple of friends and found a place that had a variety of discs in stock.

Went to the new place armed with one of the old discs, compared all of the dimensions, success at last. Stripped it, fitted them. A 2 hour job has taken me 3 days.

So, the questions are
1) Is the bible wrong? (surely not).Or is it just a case of they are all different. Or is it just my car?
2) Is this a c**p motor factors or is this generally the response you get?
3) What do you ask for if the part numbers mean nothing to them? ( I'm thinking now, vented dics off a 2litre 1989 Sierra. And some pads to go with them.Is that right?)

All S cars had 240mm front discs as std ...
a popular conversion is to go to 260mm front discs as it's all a direct fit replacement off the XR4i.

Well as far as I can remember mine was 2.0 Sierra estate on the front (240mm vented) and Sierra P5 on the rear (250mm non-vented). Don't know if this agrees with what you read in Steve Heath's book though or whether it is actually universal. If in doubt either take the offending part with you or (if that is logistically impossible) measure it carefully and take a diagram with dimensions and any identifying part numbers you can find.

My local motorfactors has a whole heap of catalogues which they use to match size/shape of components before dragging them out of the stores or ordering them in.

The front discs used to be pretty cheap, like £25 a pair, one advantage of sticking with standard components. I just had to fork out nearly £500 for new discs on the current setup.

IIRC all of the Sierras, from 2 litre upwards (except XR4i) had the same front and rear brakes, ie 2.0, 2.3D, and those are the standard S fitment.

I thought it strange after I had bolted on griff 500 callipers and 260 disks that I couldnt fit the larger pads. The pad size is the same for the 240 and 260 disks.
Car still stops a hell of allot better now though!

Picture I took when I was doing the upgrade.
You can see the difference in disk and pad size.
You just cant fit the bigger pads without modifying the callipers.

I guess that the griff 500 calipers are ford, but does anyone know which one.

could be granada right enough - the granada uses the same pads, and the caliper looks the same, but is "longer reach" because granada disks are thicker...

Thanks for the replies. So are we talking about 2litre Sierra discs and Granada pads?
The problem with taking the parts along is that the smaller places don't keep a very good stock, the place I went to didn't have any of the bits I asked for in stock ( which is understandabel, don't see many Sierra's aroundthese days)

If your S is standard, then you need Sierra disks and pads.

Granada disks and calipers would be an upgrade.

I`ve just done the same damn thing! the S1,2,3, used the sierra disc and the V8 & S4 the 260mm XR4i according to my copy of the bible....So I now have 260mm grooved and drilled disks and wondering how to fit them...Can I get this straight.. they can be fitted? what about the calipers as surely you cant use the same ones without an adaptor plate, like Tower view offer with their 300mm disks.. or have I got to replace calipers with Granada? ones?....or shall I give up sell mine on ebay and get the correct ones?

Can't help much personally nick. I am no mechanic. I do know though that the 260mm would go no where near with the original calliper on my S2. I'm sure someone else on here will know the answer. If all else fails, take it to bits and take the parts with you if you need different ones to the bits you've got. It was the only way I could get mine right.

I think we've already established that the OE front discs are 240mm vented; if Steve Heath's book says different then I suspect it is wrong because 240mm is the right answer. It's a standard size used on various Sierras such as the 2.0 liter estate, best take one of the existing discs along to ensure you match the offset as well as the diameter (which should be 240mm). I understand that there are different types of Ford caliper that all fit the same Ford upright and it may be that one of these would accept a bigger disc, but none of these were fitted as original equipment on the S series; if you're sticking with the original caliper in its original position then the disc will be 240mm diameter. Just to recap, the diameter you're looking for is 240mm.

Hope this helps!

I think the clues to this may have been given in my previous answer .. Sierra XR4i .. if you're using the XR4i disc use the XR4i caliper!

the std S calipers are ALL 240mm, the bible is defo wrong on this point.
